Fighter Feat Suggestion

Mistwell

Crusty Old Meatwad
I'm looking for suggestions on feat selections for a Half-Orc Bbn 1 / Ftr 8 (focused mainly on melee attacks with a Greatsword wielded two-handed, though he does have a couple of +1 shortspears he throws on occasion). I just picked up that 8th level of fighter, which comes with a fighter feat, and I am now 9th level total, which comes with a feat. So I need to select 2 feats.

Abilities are high to low in order: Str, Dex, Con, Wis, Int, Chr. Int is a 10, so not high enough for the expertise branch of feats. Charisma is 8, so not high enough for any charisma-based feats.

I have the following feats: Power Attack, Cleave, Power Lunge, Weapon Focus: Greatsword, Weapon Specialization: Greatsword, Improved Critical: Greatsword, Improved Initiative.

I can choose from the following sources ( I think ): PHB, the WOTC Splatbooks, and the Kingdoms of Kalamar Player's Guide.

So, any advice?

Monkey rip: Great Sword (S&F)

Then you can weild a sheild and fight with your greatsword. If you use a large sheild, effectively you're taking a -2 to attacks and getting a +2 to AC.

I'm just a fan of this feat for style reasons.

Monkey grip is good (some DMs really hate it tho).

You could also try the sunder/improved sunder feat chain (I don' think you need expertise, but I don't have my books right now).

Or maybe take iron will, as your will saves are probably pretty poor, or point-blank shot and precise shot for your ranged weapons.

Monkey grip would harm the damage I do by a LOT. I have a 22 strength (18, +2 for half-orc, +2 for level increases). He rages sometimes as well (another +4), and gets Bulls Strength sometimes. The extra .5 from strength for wielding in two hands comes out to a lot at that point.

Because he wears light armor (+2 studded leather), and has a level in Barbarian (+10 move), a good initiative (high dex. and improved init), he has a 40 move and a good initative modifier. I was therefore considering the spring attack chain of feats. However, it seems to be spring attack is not so great often, particularly since it means I won't be making my multiple attacks each round.

Knock Prone, from KOK Player's Guide, is a possibility. On a crit, you knock an opponant down, unless they make a Fort 10+damage done save (very unlikely). I was thinking that since I use a Greatsword (19-20 crit), with improved crit on it (17-20 crit), and I may get it keened eventually (15-20 crit), this might be a good feat.

Sprint, also from KOK Player's Guide, is also a possibility. It increases your speed by +10 for a number of rounds equal to your Con score, and then you cannot sprint again for 1d8 minutes. Combined with the +10 from Barbarian level (and light armor), that would make my speed 50 often (pretty darn good, particularly with the high initiative).

Spring attack combined with Knockdown from S&F might work well. Dash, from Song and Silence increases your move by 5' while wearing light armor.

If you really want to be fast, tho, just get boots of Striding and Springing. Double your move, all the time. Very handy.

Knockdown requires improved trip, which requires Expertise, which requires a higher intelligence than I have. Why Intelligence is the prerequisite instead of Dex I do not know, but it is.

I would look at either Iron Will, Extra Rage, or Close Quarters Fighting.

A fighter can never have enough will save which is why iron will would be a good choice.

Close Quarters Fighting will be really useful when you run into something with improved grab because you'll be able to avoid the grapple (which would keep you from using your greatsword) and dish out another 20 or so points of damage to boot.

Extra Rage would enable you to get the most out of your babarian levels. It's nice to be able to rage but when you can only do so once/day, that's somewhat limiting.

Ambidexterity and Two weapon Fighting might be good if you were able to get some energy enhanced armor spikes. (A raging fighter/barbarian dual wielding a greatsword and flaming armor spikes is one of the highest damage output scenarios available).

Spring attack would be quite useful for you if you are not the party's tank and/or often fight on your own. If you you've got to protect other party members, it's a lot less attractive though.

Also, if you end up facing lots of weak opponents, you might think of great cleave. With the kind of damage you seem likely to dish out, you could probably drop 8 lesser foes with your first attack, take a five foot step and drop three or four more with your second.

I'm a fan of expert tactician, because that extra attack you can often get at the beggining of a round is really nice.

I would definate think about iron will, with all your power, getting dominated or charmed is a big problem for the party.

Take a look in the quintessential and read about Two-handed power Strike and Reckless attack. My master always complain when I do 70 damage in a single round at 6th lvl.
