Fighter/Wizard a good choice now! [3.5]

First Post
So I'm now officially okay with 3.5 because it made the wizard/fighter a cool choice again. In 2ED it was a bit abusive and in 3.0 it was hard to create an effective one but with the Eldritch Knight I can now play my favorite flavor of class once more. I've always had a soft spot for those who carried swords and spells and now I can do it without being a joke of a character.

A F1/W5/EK4 has the spellcasting capabilites of a 8th level wizard and the BAB of a 7th level fighter. Hit points are okay, but not great. The lack of armor is a problem but this class never had armor in 2ED (unless you were an elf and had elven chainmail - soooo broken).

So, its balanced and fun! Yay 3.5! Comments?

Notch a couple more spellcaster levels (and, oddly, some BAB) for Spellsword, and you can even get your mithral chainmail.

Of course, by then, you've paid enough for the privilege, but it's still cool.

Agreed!

As soon as I get to play again I am going play a EK. It is just the type of character I want. I even have some of my feats and weapons chosen. Using Rank fighting from The Ulitimate Book of Feats and a Glavie I won't even have to worry to much about armor or HP. :D

That's funny -I came up with glaive on my own as well.

10th level 50,000 gp 32 point buy Eldritch Knight

I prefer the Spellsword to the Eldritch Knight. More flavorful abilities and it doesn't seem like a Fighter/Wizard that was poorly mashed together. Personally, I loathe everything about the EK.

Actually, what I'm understanding from reading the comments here is that a Fighter/Wizard still sucks. It's the Fighter/Wizard/Eldritch Knight that is functional.

Chalk me up with those that don't believe a PrC is an acceptable fix to the multiclass problems.

Chalk me up as noting that the EK is a good compromise as opposed to not ruining the game by changing the multi-class system, the XP system and the spell system all to fix fighter/wizards.

Cheers!

Chalk me up as yet again agreeing with Merric. :)
