The lack of armor is a problem

You know...the lack of armor has never been a problem in my opinion. I've never seen a fighter/magic-user make it to even medium levels without having picked up Bracers of Defense...or Bracers of Armor.

Once you get to a reasonably high level (especially in 3.0 and 3.5) these bracers may have very reasonably been upgraded to Bracers of Armor AC 8. Now that you can add additional bonuses to these, like Heavy Fortification and use them with a shield (animated heavy steel shield anyone?).

No, I know, especially at lower levels, that the lack of armor can hurt some (of course, Mage Armor can make up for that a lot, most starting characters will have armor with an armor rating of 4, just like you).

If you concentrate your fighter feats on sticking with a lightly armored fighter (expertise, dodge, mobility and the like) you can be VERY affective.

The difference between the EK and the Spellsword is that the EK retains his spell progression, while the Spellsword gains special abilities instead.

So it really depends on which is more important to your 'flavor' or concept: gaining spell progression, or gaining abilities to improve your spellcasting in melee.

Possibly. The reason we got Eldritch Knight, Arcane Trickster and Mystic Theurge in the 3.5E DMG is because the Fighter/Wizard, Wizard/Rogue and Cleric/Wizard were viable archetypes before 3E.

Most other combinations were not allowed in previous editions, but there's no reason why supplements now can't come out with prestige classes which combine other classes.

The Core rules can't cover every weird case, after all.

Cheers!

Has anyone tried combinations of Mystic Theurge and Eldrich Knight to get a Cleric/Fighter/Wizard feel? (I had a soft spot for the Cleric/Fighter/Magic-User in 1st ed -- A multi-class combo originally open only to half-elves (this was before the 1st ed Unearthed Arcana, or the dragon magazine articles that inspired the "new" class level limits, and allowed all the races to be pc clerics).

And would a bard/fighter/EK work? I don't have the manual with me right now...but that guy can cast spells in light armour, at least.

Chalk me up as a person intrigued by the assumption that some players make that any PrC in an "official" book is somehow a core class, and that it's OK to take multiple PrCs. "Why yes, I do think that a Fighter/Wizard/Eldritch Knight/Mystic Theurge/Red Wizard/Achmage/Dragon Disciple is a cool combo. Just look at how big my p***s is now!"
