D&D 5E (2024) Fly and carrying

The party comes to a 60’ wide chasm that they need to cross. Luckily the wizard still has the fly spell active on themself. They have strength 10 and are already carrying 10lbs of kit. The rogue weighs 140lbs with armor and equipment, the cleric weighs 200lbs, while the fighter weights 305 lbs with armor and equipment (big dude in plate)

The wizard can ferry the rogue across at normal 60ft speed. double move and be across the chasm and back in one rounds.

The wizard can ferry the cleric across at 5’ speed, double move it would take 5 rounds to get them across and then 1\2 round to come back.

The wizard can’t carry the fighter. He’s more than 30 x Str. He’ll have to take the long way round.

NB: just noticed that the fly spell no longer slow drops people to the ground when it ends. How did I miss that! Brutal if you fail that concentration check.

NNB: I’m aware the easy thing would be to cast fly again on the fighter. Let’s assume no more slots.

I think fly should have a set weight limit, rather than being variable based on the weight and carrying capacity of the spell's target. Otherwise you get into weird situations, like the strength 20 Goliath with fly can carry an entire party, while the gnome wizard with strength 8 can barely carry himself.

Looks right. Could the wizard ferry the plate across and then go back and get the fighter who will now weigh less than 300?

Looking at the rules for Carrying Capacity on PHB p. 362-63, I read them differently than you. With STR 10 as a M creature, you can carry 15 x Strength, or 150 pounds. You've said the flyer is carrying 10 pounds already, so 140 is available:

1. Rogue. Yes, you can carry the 140 pound rogue.
2. Cleric. No, you cannot carry the 200 pound rogue. You can, however, push, pull, or lift them, but I would say that doesn't matter. You're not doing any of those things when you move them while flying. I'd say they're too big for you.
3. Fighter, heavier still, you couldn't even budge them.

There is a reason to invest in STR, and not make it a dump stat, this is one of them.

Exception: Be an Goliath! In that case, your capacity would be doubled (30 x Strength, or 300 pounds).
Then you could carry the Rogue or the Cleric, and, as long as you both dumped some of those iron rations you've been carrying around since first level that came with your character but have somehow never crossed off, you could carry the fighter too.

Surely if you’re flying all you have to be able to do is lift them?
