Geek Confessional Thread 2024

The thing is that we're negotiating times and days too. I think I'm going to have to say
something vaguely honest, but milquetoast like "I don't think this is the game for me."
This is why I usually start with one shot or short campaigns with folks on the net I dont know. I never commit to a long campaign out the gate. Too many times Ive run into play style differences that didnt work for me.

I think that this is the best approach. No need to make it personal. He make take it personally, but I've always found it best to just rip the bandaid off quickly, don't facilitate and drag things on. Be honest, but polite, apologize for any inconvenience, and just move on.

I prefer low-powered superheroes to god-like supers. Green Arrow and Hawkeye are more interesting as characters than Superman or Flash. The most interesting thing about Superman is that he’s a reporter. The most interesting thing about Flash is his rogues gallery. I think Spider-Man nails the balance perfectly. Super without being inhuman. Down-to-earth and facing real-world problems despite the powers. Likewise with the X-Men and many other street-level superheroes.

I like older movies more than most recent movies. Old black and white movies rock. Noir movies are some of the best. Stuff from the ’70s and ’80s kicks ass. Sure, it’s dated and some of the content isn’t kosher by today’s standards. I like that movies got in and got out in 90-120 minutes. I can’t stand the absolute sprawling nonsense of most movies that go over 90-120 minutes. Contrary to that, I absolutely love the sprawling nonsense of Bollywood movies that feel too short at 4-5 hour run times.

EC Comics’ horror comics were the height of horror comics. Tales from the Crypt was the best of the bunch. Tales from the Crypt was one of the best horror anthology TV shows ever made. It looks a little dated now, but they still hold up. The only show better is the original Twilight Zone.

It’s easy to tell which writers came up through academia vs which came up as journalists and reporters. The writing style is wildly different. Flowery nonsense vs rapid-fire prose. I’ll take the rapid-fire reporters every time. Likewise, pulp writers kick ass. Tell me a cool, outlandish story and get on with it. Plot-driven genre fiction of just about every stripe is far more interesting to me than anything that snobs describe as literary.

I am assuredly a sucker for a good (and sometimes bad) movie from the 70s or 80s. I agree that movies need to get shorter. Tell tighter stories. Omit a few characters that aren't essential. Make the 2+ hour movies the exception rather than the rule.

EC Comics has such a massive influence on horror to this day. And those old comics are still sharp and gruesome. As far as movements within horror comics, the only other thing I can think of that comes close is DC's Vertigo line in the 90s.

Oh I've got a geek confession:

I didn't watch Star Trek: TOS properly until after TNG, despite having extremely ample opportunity to (it was on repeat quite a lot on UK TV) and knowing it existed! Indeed I assumed it was rubbish and told people who liked TNG that they shouldn't bother with TOS!

I did watch the TOS-era movies and enjoyed them, though. I'm not sure how I mentally squared with my views on the series!

This was all because I saw a couple of episodes of TOS aged like 7-8, and they both seemed really silly and bad - I later realized I'd somehow managed to see some of the absolute worst episodes.
