'God' cut from His Dark Materials movie

I'm calling shenanigans on this. It all rings pretty hollow to me. They have to make changes to the core concept of the book, but they're still filming it, and now they are talking about all the changes? It sounds like a combo of hype and excuses. I'm reminded of the whole "the reason Alexander failed is because of homophobia and not because the movie sucked".

As to the changes themselves...well, it's not like Hollywood has ever bought the rights to something only to change it beyond recognition for no reason whatsoever. Tim Burton's Planet Of The Apes, Dean Devlin's Godzilla, the Universal versions of Dracula and Frankenstein,I, Robot, Wild, Wild West, Catwoman, the made-for-tv versions of Captain America, etc., etc., etc..

In "An Evening with Kevin Smith" he tells the story of how he decided to go to a protest rally...

My favorite part was when he recalled that one of the protesters disapproved of the obscene protest slogan Kevin had on his sign. Now THAT'S a Kevin Smith moment. :D

As for this series of books, I've never read them, but I'm always saddened to hear that integral plot elements are cut out of an adaptation. A scene here or there, a particularly brutal torture scene or something of that nature I wouldn't mind (they could have removed a LOT of the movie Hannibal and I wouldn't have minded :D), but removing something that is not obscene, and is integral to the book, makes no sense. Unlike the decision-makers in this example, I give the movie-going public a little more credit than that.

Well at least this thread (and Pielorinho's endorsement) made me order the books from amazon. I hope they're as good as you say... :)
Oh, the responsibility!

I had no idea when I read them how controversial they'd turn out to be. People seem to love them or hate them. If you hate them, I deny everything :).

Starship Troopers is also a good example.
