Let's see.. I'm going to take a bit of a stab at Dante's question about God Mongers and why people do it. When people bring in a new character, be it a person who is completely new to the site, or someone looking for something new. It tends to be
very difficult to get to know new people unless you are very creative and even then sometimes it does not work. I believe people view these God Mongers as something that will Gain them attention. "I am the True God of Love.... " Unfortunately, that just makes me roll my eyes and want to gag. Like Jardel said, it is much nicer to play with a really nice regular person than one who can make anything they want appear, have powers up the wazoo and can do anything. I like a person who's got real abilities, who can do some things and can't do some things.
I saw a really great character on the other day. This character seemed regular, with a great charactre flaw.
(The one who's character I'm going to describe will know who I am referring to. I'm purposely keeping out names for identity sake
The way this character was presented was what I felt to be very orginial. Someone who worries people will discover this flaw. The character had to handle a small mishap that resulted due to this flaw but the player did an excellent job playing the character. I found myself having one of the most fun days playing with this character.
Other characters are interesting to watch if they have a great storyline. I love "hearing" characters recount things happening to them off the site. I spent an evening taking with a character one night about an act that happened due to being enraged and the feelings the character had about it. I'd much rather chat to "people" rather than those "godly" types.
I do have to agree with what was said before, however, in the fact that even those "god" types can be great fun to play with if they are played correctly. Moondyre, for example, was a great character to chat with and even though she was the daughter of gods, she was still "normal" in the way she was presented. She didn't go about saying "I'm a child of a god, bow down to me" but just said it the same as if I would say so-and-so is my mother. Very nicely done, IMHO.
Sadly, there will always be fads - weres, vamps, Gods, deamons, hell fiends and so forth. The true test for those playing characters of said fads is to play them fairly and to have a good time doing it. Make your character able to be hurt. Make them take a hit or three. Reesa, for example, is a fairly powerful character in a way. However, she is always getting herself into troubles and facing the end of swords or fists. She's been beaten by Viles aplenty, tormented by Malicki, killed by Zugran... it's a long story for her. My main rule is this (and this is because I'm a WizO but anyhow.. ) you can do what you want to Reesa, except kill her, and only when I am not on duty. If you want to have your mean character take on Reesa, no problem.. but only at the end of my shift or when it's done. I can't let you beat Reesa to a pulp where she becomes unconscious when I have just started hosting hehe..
For my other characters... I have some that are very important to me and I will not allow them to die. However, I'll allow all sorts of things to happen to them. I've had them mind controlled, posessed, beaten, tortured, tormented, etc, etc. I try to be fair and do what I can to allow the other guy to have a good time. I'll go into a fight but I find myself quickly discouraged if everything I attempt to do is met with failure. If I can't get a few good hits in, I don't want to participate any more and often just let whatever bad thing happen, take the character out, and don't play that one for a while.
*blinks at her post* Whoops.. I'm awfully chatty tonight... hehe... sorry folks.. Uh.. how about them Goldfish people? *whistles innocently and wanders off*
