D&D (2024) GWM feat and ranged weapons?

I'm considering dropping melee penalty removal from SS and adding something to damage so it can catch up to GWM.
In this variant GWM would not add anything to ranged weapons.

Added to Sharpshooter:
If you have Extra attack feature and you used Attack action on your turn, you can make one attack with that Ranged weapon as a Bonus action.

Then with my added penalties for melee shooting. a new feat:

Close-quarters shooter:
+1 dex
remove attack penalty when shooting while in melee range.
remove attack bonus that others have on you after you used ranged weapon.
AoO provoked by your ranged attacks are made with disadvantage.
you threaten area of 10ft with your ranged weapons. Yes, your AoO will provoke an AoO.
you add prof bonus to your damage with ranged weapons on targets within 10ft.

Is this intended to work?
Is it an exploit due to poor wording of the feat?
Is it meant to be double sub-optimal for ranged attacks?

somehow "cleave" part is not intended to be in philosophy with ranged attacks, or we can describe ranged cleave as pierce?

And if that feat is meant to work with Heavy ranged weapons, why does it not have +1 DEX option for it.

So this feat needs to be cleared in wording that in only works with MELEE attacks or +1 DEX needs to be added to options for feats ASI.
Also Cleave function needs to work somehow for ranged weapons?
Maybe pierce the target and damage someone directly behind the target. Grid users will be happy with this suggestion.

It works with melee weapons as intended I believe.

Used with a Ranged build I think the intent is to give you a +1 strength, +3 damage with your longbow (in tier 2) and let you make a another attack with your Rapier when you are forced into melee and drop someone to 0 using it.

I don't see a problem with that really. I do see a problem with using heavy ranged weapons while you have an 8 Strength.

I don't see a problem with giving fighter that are primarily melee heavy weapon focus a bit of a bump on ranged attacks as well. If you're in a game where you need to fall back on range now and then it's nice if you can be a bit more effective.

What I like is that I can finally make a fighter that gets a moderate dex, archery style and gwm and have a servicable ranged attack, while still fully focusing on melee.

Seems pretty obvious that they want this to work with Ranged weapons, but that they felt like letting brute strength somehow enable you to quickly shoot a second target was a bridge too far so they left the Melee requirement in for Hew.

I'm not sure what you mean by "double sub-optimal", because this is a great feat for ranged attackers even if you plan to never use melee weapons or care about Strength other than qualifying for the feat. I will say that makes the feat seem a bit overpowered if so many builds will take 13 Strength (bumped to 14) for no other reason than just to qualify for GWM. But I think it's ok as is.
