And I only get meaner as I get older. :p ;)

But yeah while I'm fine with weapons of legacy, I'm not fine with "Hey I'm an archer, I don't melee!" You do now...

Something makes me wanna sing:
"Sunder ..... Sunder .... "

Nightfall: The trick about being an archer is to kill your opponents before they close to melee. Most D&D archers fail to remember this simple historic rule.

The "arrow as improvised weapon" bit is an interesting loophole and a neat visual, but IMC it would run into the limit on the number of free actions. What limit, you ask? The one where the DM has to use his judgment about what's reasonable.

Despite the structure of the D&D turn, an archer does not fire two arrows and then stand around waiting for a while before firing again. He's drawing and loosing arrows just as fast as his hands can move. At any given instant he is likely to have an arrow in his hand, but he's trying to nock it on his bowstring; he is not gripping it in his fist like a dagger and preparing to stab someone with it.

If the archer uses the Draw A Weapon action, perhaps during a Move or with the Quick Draw feat, he can ready an arrow for melee use. But he doesn't automatically get to carry an improvised dagger around in between shots, which would remove one of the archer's big downsides at no cost to him.

Note again: This is how the DM's judgement call goes IMC. Your mileage may vary.

How about another archer equally badass? You could have a sniper duel, maybe have them them stalking each other (Ever see Enemy at the Gates?) I think that could be cool as heck. Challenging, and also highlighting how skilled and cool the character is.

I'd say give him more opponents that shoot back. Archer PCs are effective, but they don't sweat as much as a frontline fighter b/c they're not taking hits.

Use some aerial creatures w/encounters. That way he can deal w/the flying threat while the rest of the party deals w/the enemies on land.

Throw in some monsters w/rogue levels, and have them tumble past the rest of the party and go for the archer.

Partial concealment could also be fun. Maybe a light mist that obscures vision beyond 10". A 20% miss chance makes things more difficult, but not impossible like w/invisible opponents.

Just curious... Olaf, did you find any helpful tips here that you think will help?

Definitely! I may not have responded to most of them but I have found many useful suggestions. Some posts are also not directly useful to me but set off some ideas in my head that I might be able to try.

Even still if you have a suggestion, keep em' coming! The more, the better. :D

Dark,

Yeah well even if they do think that, I'm in favor of the "Boromir" approach to archers. "I can still kick ass even with 50 arrows sticking out of me!" It helps if said thing has DR that the archer didn't take into account for.
