Help with Alignment Bookkeeping

Could someone give a brief rundown on the Allegiance system from Elric?

It is somewhat reminiscent of Pendragon--no surprise there I suppose ;)

You have ratings in Law, Chaos, and The Balance.

An experience check is made against the current value on a d100. Rolling greater than the current value increases the score by d6 points (or d8 for Chaos). (For scores of 100 or more this chance is equal to Int as a percentage.)

GMs may also assign points for certain acts. Interestingly, IIRC, there is no provision made for reducing these scores--except for the Balance in a couple of limited circumstances.

When a score is at least 20 points higher than the others you may declare an allegiance to that force and accrue certain benefits.

When a score rises above 100 you may attempt to become a champion of that force, and accrue even greater benefits.

When having an allegiance you must roll greater than the relevant score to act contrary to it freely--otherwise you lose the benefits associated with it, and may become marked as an enemy.

I think that's pretty much the basics.

BTW, this is from the non-d20 version.

Three separate ratings? It seems only natural to put those three at the left, middle, and right of a single continuum, doesn't it?

You would think so; and, as I mentioned, for all intents and purposes there's no way to go down in a rating (unless I'm forgetting something).

Personally, I like the little system we cooked up ;)

Allegiance can/does go down. If you perform contrary to the interests of your allegiance, you have to make an allegiance test/check (d% against the score with failing knocking the score down uh...1d8 points for Chaos and 1d6 for Law or Balance, IIRC).

They pretty much kept it the same in the d20 version (though it really doesnt have a "d20 feel" to it.) I am currently restructuring it for my game (and making the system more "d20ish").

I do like the Pendragon system though, and Erica (DnDChick) and I had devised a system almost exactly like yours (Law/Chaos, Good/Evil) based on...Pendragon of course.

It's been a while ;)

Could I tempt you to post some of it?

I'd be interested to see how you've approached it :)

Well- basically, I was toying around with alignment in my game (not that I hate the current system, just get bored sometimes :)) and Erica suggested a Law/Chaos, Good/Evil opposing system based on Pendragon.

We hadn't really worked out the details, just the hard and fast rules (total of each axis must equal 20), though I have toyed with it a little more.

Something like this: 12 or greater is an allegiance to that alignment (Law/Chaos, Good/Evil).

Neither over 11 is Neutral/Balance (so true neutral would be 11/9, 10/10, or 9/11 in both). The Balance is hard to obtain and maintain so we gave it a tight range of numbers.

18 or higher in one score qualifies the creature as an Agent of Law, Chaos, Good, or Evil. Neutrality/The Balance maintains no agents (but they can still get benefits like an Agent).

That's about as far as we got. Havent worked out all the details yet. I am actually leaning more toward this system that one like Elric (less bookkeeping with this one).
