D&D General How Did You Generate Your Most Recent Character's Stats?

Think back to your last D&D character. Which method did you use to generate ability scores?

So, it may be useful to notice that it isn't just individual players, GMs, or tables that move away from rolled stats.

If you look outside of D&D, it is a pretty small share of games that have random stat generation.
Also if you look at D&D players under like, 35, especially D&D players who started with 5E, it's much, much smaller proportion than ENworld who roll for stats.

It is useful, yes. My understanding was the conversation here was in the context of D&D--and most probably in the context of newer editions thereof. Obviously I wouldn't roll for stats in Cypher or Fate or Blades in the Dark or ...

Well those folks probably shouldn’t roll stats in the first place
Small clarification: then then entire table shouldn't roll stats.
Yep, and yep. When I'm in the DM chair and it's time to roll up new characters, I let the players each choose the method they want to use for their stats. My players usually choose to roll, except for one person who always uses point-buy. We've never had any issues.

EDIT: One time, one of my players rolled so poorly that she asked if she could use the same stats that another player rolled up. "I don't mind if they don't," I said. (They didn't mind.) I've also had players roll their stats, then scrap them in favor of the standard array when they rolled poorly.

Someone PICKING high stats rather than rolling high stats. It's not a problem with high stats. If I were in a game and rolled as 12's and you rolled all 18's, I wouldn't care in the least. If I rolled all 12's and you just picked all 18's, I would have a major problem with it.
Indeed. Reminds me of a funny story. I played in a campaign where the Dungeon Master just told us to choose our ability scores, period°.

I rebelled and rolled my scores instead.

° Full stop.

I chose "I used a fixed array, either the one in the book or a custom version of it," because it is closest to what we did this past Monday night to make new characters for a game a friend is starting up (his first real attempt at DMing!), but what we actually did was a STAT DRAFT!

(and I still have a few copies of my stat draft rules zine available for those who want to buy one ;))
