How does your group split treasure?

The time has come in my group's game to discuss our treasure division policy. We have been playing together for a year and we used to roll for treasure. The highest roller got to pick first amongst magical items but I guess a few lines were crossed and appearantly we can't be grown ups about it.

So how does your group divide treasure.

Almost like an auction house

"So, anyone mind if I take that bow? Anyone want the bow? Speak up now, or it's mine. Ok. I get the bow. Now the axe."

"Oh! Dibs!"

"Any objections? No? Ok. Here's the axe. Next up, the flaming scythe. Anyone? One flaming scythe? Well, if no one wants it, I'll keep it to sell... Ok, next is..."

This works well because of several factors.
1. The groups I've been in recently havn't been ambitious about stuff.
2. Everyone trusts me to sell things, and buy stuff the group wouldn't think about anyway, like potions of clw, and torches.
3. We don't overlap in areas of want too much. Each person uses a different weapon, and picks up items that fit within their particular style. The only issue is that of light armor, as there's 3-4 of us who could use that. Armor goes to the guy who gets hurt the most, and everyone else gets the hand-me-downs.

We try to give useful items to the people who can use them best, but then once that happens, the majority of the party says, "Lets sell the rest for gold, who cares if you only have 1 magic weapon at the moment, you'll never need a back up, or backup armor, or stuff for trade value, that would be stupid!"

We finances and gems evenly. We each get a share , and the rest goes in a group fund we use for buying things that are of benefit to all ( healing wands, potions, etc.).
Magic items go to whomever is most in need of them.
Anything else, we don't want or need, we sell and whatever we get for it, is split between us, or into the group fund.

The group I DM for usually divides up magial items before identifying them and whoever doesn't get a magical item gets gold or gems. They're odd.

On the spot, stuff is divvyed up on a "who's gonna find this useful" basis. Stuff the entire group can use goes into a "noone really owns this, but bob is carrying it" pool, as does most cash or unidentified items.

Later (usually after the adventure), anything we've recognised as a 'big ticket' item is chucked back into the pool, and portioned out as part of the loot on a fair basis. So far we've all been grown up and mature, and said "well, if you want it, have it".

Anything that's unwanted is sold for cash and divvyed up.

If you wanted a spare weapon/armour/whatever, then you should have taken the thing as your payment.

This all lets us portion out treasure fairly, without breaking the flow of an adventure to quibble over stuff.

If you cannot be grown-ups about it, there are going to be problems no matter what method you use.

My group works simply - monetary treasure gets split evenly. magical treasure goes to the character we think will have the best use of it. Magical treasure nobody has a good use for gets sold, and the money gets split or goes into the party pot.

This works because all the characters in the group are more intereted in reaching certain goals than in making themselves rich. With characters motivated by monetary gain, this won't work as well.
