How "into it" do you get?

As DM i've gone overboard a couple times over the years. Once i played a psychotic lich trapped in Limbo who thought he was a diety. Family members upstairs wondered why i was shouting at the top of my lungs, "I - AM - A - GOD!!!!!!"

I can get really 'into it'. In the game I play in (as oppose to DM) a beloved NPC died in a major fight. He had been our comrade in arms for a very long time (about 4 months game time but over a year of real time) and i had grown quite fond of him (Krunk, 1/2 Orc Fighter extraordinaire). When he died I grew very quiet and grim. I felt like my best friend had died (my characte is a bit anti-social with the rest of the group but is loyal and gets the job done) and decided that the person responsible had to die by my hand. In the ensuing combat I drove hard and fast for the main villian and taunted and cursed him. When I put that bastich down I felt wonderful! Probably the best in-combat roleplaying experience I've ever had!

When I DM I try to change the voices and mannerism for major NPCs. I like the players to be able to tell who is talking just by how I am acting.

I have sometimes found myself physically grabbing other player as a gesture that my PC will do.
I did the same thing once. Except it was a woman on a bus instead of another player. Fortunately the trial judge was fairly understanding.

In a campaign that ran for many years in the 80's, the GM had created a minor crocodile god called something like "Rezalezabgib" (something he stole from a Muppet Show episode, we found out later).

He first appeared when someone had stolen his eyes. Our job was to get them back. Whenever someone would say his name, he would appear, look for his eyes, and then eat them if one wasn't there.

Eventually we got the eyes back, but one was stolen again later. The GM was discussing something in character and forgot this bit. He, absentmindedly, had the character say "Rezalezabgib" and every single player went diving for cover - under the table, out of the room, you name it.

LOL

Every time i think of this matter i want to change my group!
I try and want to role-play/get into it as much as possible, but the others rarely get into character and i find it difficult to be the only one to do this.

We like to play in character, but we don't get physical. I will use motions like running fingers over a scar, some type of personal characteristic.

I wish my group was a bit more 'in character', but sometimes not. I like the fact that we are a casual lot, and it makes it a lot easier since we switch DMs almost on a monthly basis. See, we have a rotation going in our game, and we all use the same setting. I think one of the downsides to this though is that there tends to be a little less roleplaying. Not sure why.

I used to be a lot more into the roleplaying aspect, including using a certain voice, and actually saying what my character says. DMing a lot will break you of that for the most part, because you go thru so many personas in an adventure that you just stop trying to be clever or unique after a while.

But I am just starting to get back 'into character' since I am now exclusively a player (I don't have as much time to create adventures for my home group anymore). And I've chosen a character that I think will bring some more roleplaying back to the group.

As a player, I have found it depends upon my mood the day of the game. Some days I really get into it; my character has stormed off when he gets mad at the party (I stormed out of the room, everyone thought I was really mad at them - oops, a little too into it). Other days I just can't do it.

As a DM I try to avoid getting into it too much. It did not go over well the day I brought in the Bissel Green Steamer and shot it at people whose characters were hit by dragon breath...just kidding...DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.

We got props (gotta love those after-Halloween sales for weapons :) ), we got costumes. We go into physical detail, where appropriate, about acrobatic moves with certain attacks, mainly to show how feasible it would be to attempt them.
