How will PC's make money in your world

Since there is no profession skill anymore (not that this rules out making a living in your down time) I wonder how PC's in some worlds will be making money.

Of course there is the standard kill monsters take treasure routine, but I don't like that much (monsters having treasure that is), and I would like to hear other ideas.

I think PoL setting lends itself to PC's being hired as sellswords to protect merchants and caravans, also small towns having raider problems or some such.

In my world the PC's will largely be broke, treasure will be hard to come by, but I don't want to force them to have "jobs" they do when they are not adventuring, so I'm going to say they make thier money two ways
1. as sellswords gaurding places or people (already mentioned)
2. delivering mail

I don't know how that sounds to you all but think about it, back in the day there were no newspapers or email, people want news and to hear from family members who have moved. So the PC's, being the kind of people who regularly travel the dangerous roads and trails between towns, constantly are asked/offered money to take mail and such back and forth to these towns.

It may not be a perfect system, but it's a new idea, I've always loved the move "The Postman", and it give my PC's an excuse to wander around instead of just "seeking adventure"

Depends a lot on the campaign.

I like the rich benefactor approach, where the PCs are paid and given missions, the ultimate goals of which they do not yet really understand.

Well just to state this first: I think there will be some manner of Profession in 4e, it will just take a different form. Could take the form of Specializations in certain Skills (you gain a bonus when you use that skill in something related to your Profession), background "rituals" (you gain certain specific rituals to show your ability in that profession), or feats you can take.

As for the core of the thread, well for my first game. The PCs won't have much money throughout the whole game, most of it will be from looting corpses, train robberies, bank robberies, ordinary theft, gambling, etc.

This is what happens when the PCs are outlaws.

How will my players make money in 4E?

With ore, smelting, molds and stamps, of course!

We're playing M&M*

*Minerals & Moneymakers.

I plan to get around the monsters not having gold and gear by using more or less what FF12 uses.

Selling bits of the monsters to towns and traders (For use in cooking, magic, crafting, etc) to get the party gold.

Plus it's fun to ask who is haling around the 15 dead rats...
