You missed the big class update. It's pretty substantial.

Class features have been spread out over more levels. Level 1 characters only get one or two class features with few or no choices, emphasizing quick character creation. Other important class features show up over the next few levels (e.g., Paladins get divine sense at level 1, spellcasting at level 2, turn undead at level 3...). You pick a subclass around level 3, and you get your first ability score improvement (or, optionally, feat) around level 4.

Depends who you ask.

I think it shows potential but it depends on their balancing and follow through with promised modularity.
I'm with Jester on this one, even if we seem to be on opposite sides of the "Mage Umbrella" debate. Next is showing some promise in this latest packet, though it still has some problems (boring Humans is a prime example). I'm eager to see the next packet to see where they are now. Even if I don't like it as much as 4E when it releases, I may end up switching anyway, just to get my 3E-loving friends back on board with the game. Besides, it's not as if I despised 3E at its core--it's just that I didn't feel like houseruling out all the problems I had with it.
 

It's looking like 2.5 to me, which is perfect, 3rd Ed is where it started to derail.

I have played 3rd and 4th Ed extensively, it just seems for every good idea they have (which are many, I can enjoy both), they also get farther away from what D&D is.

And the number bloat of 3rd (the worst offender) and 4th really bore me to tears.
