D&D 5E I thought that I had seen a Range limit to the sneak attack with the Ranged Weapon, 30 feet

I thought that I had seen a Range limit to the sneak attack with the Ranged Weapon, 30 feet, but now I can not find it; any help, or was it in 3.5

There isn't a range limit on sneak attack, it even states that "it must be a finesse or Ranged weapon" on page 96

I don't believe that limit exists in 5th edition, it is the rule in 3.0/3.5/Pathfinder so most likely where you are remembering it from.

EDIT: In 5e, attacks with ranged weapons beyond the normal (first) range category are made at disadvantage, you can't sneak attack if disadvantage is applied so there is that.

And thinking about that, I have been letting a rogue get away with too many dagger throw sneak attacks, the range on a dagger is only (20/60) so anything past 20' can't be a sneak attack.

You'd end up having to have someone provide you advantage to offset the disadvantage. Say, by using the Help action or something.

so yes the Range limit is for the long Range Disadvantage,
so the limit is for the weapons is as follows
Dart - out to 20 feet
Short bow - out to 80 feet
Sling - out to 30 feet
Long bow - out to 150 feet
Ballista - out to 120 feet
Cannon - out to 600 feet
Mangonel - out to 200 feet
Trebuchet - out to 300 feet

so this is also true when used together

True Strike - Advantage on next attack or Help - Advantage on next attack or Greater Invisible
Sharpshooter - attacking at long Range doesn't impose disadvantage on your ranged weapons attack rolls

so the new Sneak Attack damage Ranges are:

Dart - out to 60 feet
Short bow - out to 320 feet
Sling - out to 120 feet
Long bow - out to 600 feet
Ballista - out to 480 feet
Cannon - out to 2400 feet
Mangonel - out to 800 feet
Trebuchet - out to 1200 feet

and at these distances my Halfling Assassin (Greater Invisible) could wait for the King of a castle or Dragon or Captain of a Ship to come into view, shoot, fire or what ever the terms is for the weapon, get surprise, and get auto Critical and at 17 level double the damage, add some poison bolts or mercury in the cannon shot

then move to the next weapon that was readied by the crew and do it again

It reads for the weapons; "One Target" be it a Ship or a Creature

This is All RAW (and Damn to "RACS, Rules As Common Sense)

Athinar you do understand in that other thread the whole sneak attack with siege weapons thing was mentioned to reference a scene from a comedic movie, sure by RAW a siege weapon is a Ranged Weapon Attack so sneak attack could apply but I imagine if that ever came up at my table at least it would be in a situation needing siege weapons like the rogue is manning a ballista in tower under attack by a dragon, or using a cannon on board a ship to sink another ship, not like in the movie where they move a ballista into a tavern lining up the attack and shooting a person in the back.

You'd end up having to have someone provide you advantage to offset the disadvantage. Say, by using the Help action or something.
Once disadvantage offsets advantage, that's it. 2 advantages + 1 disadvantage = Nothing. The ally next to the target can still be of use though.

Could it be that miniature meant you can't gain advantage at long range? That is, you can negate disadvantage and gain sneak attack, but you can't ever get actual advantage...

I can't imagine this to be a problem.

At level 17 kings and castles are no longer worthy challenges.

Autohitcritting with ballistas only work as long as, you know, your ship isn't blown to bits, sucked into a dimensional vortex. Or just plain eaten.

So enjoy your ballistas while they last. ☺
