D&D 5E I thought that I had seen a Range limit to the sneak attack with the Ranged Weapon, 30 feet

Right at long range you can't get net advantage because you have disadvantage, so the best you can hope for is a normal roll. Now if you have an ally within 5' of the target and advantage cancelling out the disadvantage for long range so it is a normal attack roll you could sneak attack someone 600' away with a longbow.

Could it be that miniature meant you can't gain advantage at long range? That is, you can negate disadvantage and gain sneak attack, but you can't ever get actual advantage...

The Feat Sharpshooter - Attacking at long Range doesn't impose disadvantage at long Range

True Strike - would not work, that is where I seen that 30 feet, Target Range of the Spell is 30 feet

Help - When you take the Help Action, the creature you aid gains advantage on the next ability check it makes to perform the task you are helping with; in this case the Helper is moving the Weapon for a better shot

Invisibility or Greater Invisibility - Advantage

so the first shot would be with Surprise - Advantage

As much as I hate to admit it :) - I agree with Athinar's reading of Sharpshooter: The feat does not cancel out the Disadvantage for attacking at long range - the Disadvantage is never incurred in the first place.

Therefore, anything that grants Advantage would apply. And I don't have a problem with that.

I can see it, Critical with a Cannon (+3 magical to boot), double damage 8d10+6 (critical 16d10+6), the Cannon ball (+3 magical to boot), Sneak attack for my Halfling 18th level Assassin, 9d6 (critical 18d6),

Cannon Ball +3 with poison in side, say Purple Worm poison 12d6 failed save

1st Level Fighter, +2 Archery, +2 bonus to attack rolls for Ranged weapons
1st Level Mage - Mage Armor, True Strike (does not work in this event)

and to top it off

Death Strike - Double all Damage if the creature fails a save

Could I be wrong on this?

The cannon is also hidden in brushes

Slightly off topic, but in my game siege weapons tend to be used a great deal, so I had to make rules that made a bit more sense.

We play that siege weapons are fired by Int rather than Dex. The ranging of a catapult is about physics and maths, not a steady hand.

I also have a 'hit' mean that you were on target, the ammo lands in the general area you want. So now everybody in the area of effect makes a dex save for half damage. We tend to have some very nasty siege weapons in the campaign though, so half damage still kills most people.

I'm sorry, you can not do that, it's not RAW, don't use common sense in 5.0 or the Hasbro Lego Police will come and arrest you :)

I would never use the Mangonel/Trebuchet Catapult, it is an indirect Weapon and is for area affect damage not for the use by an Assassin

the closest thing I have to a Sniper's Rifle is the Cannon or the Ballista

This is also how i think about it.

You know, forbidding sneak attack with ranged weapons OR adding a fixed range limit to sneak attack like in 3ed, would get rid of all problems and nonsense...
