Bellalalalinda thanks the little chipmunk, and Whistler gives it a peanut.

She then shares the information with her fellow travellers: "Many of the traps seem to have been sprung by someone who has gone in and already left. We can see what that person has left, or we can follow the trail of the person who has already succeeded."

OOC: re: whether it's worth going into the cave, this is the dialogue in my head right now:

Humperdinck: The loser ran off alone, and the winner followed
those footprints, toward Guilder.

Rugen: Shall we track them both?

Humperdinck: The loser is nothing. Only the princess matters.

*I'm fine with either.

The cavern is full or rock slides, pit traps, spikes, fallen guillotine blades, remnants of smoke bombs and worse. As you carefully prod forward you eventually find a kobold. His lips cut off and his mouth tied into a toothy sharp smile, his teeth clamped down on the butt of a still burning torch. His eyes are gouged out and then covered with two gold coins. A curtain has been shaped into wings against the wall, stuck into his shoulder sockets with pins. A "tail" made from flaps of his skin and scales hangs lower than his actual tail. He appears to be crucified into the wall by four crossbow bolts, one in each major limb. A folded up document seems to hang from his pocket.

A number of chests and crafting tools can be seen in the area, as well as rations and even some gold.

Gul shuddered at the gruesome sight, and averted his eyes.

"Eh, free gold..," He tried to see the up side in the situation, "but really, what message is his attacker trying to convey here? Why go to such extremes for a simple kobold?"

OOC:
Do we need to make a history or religion check to see if the ritualistic position rings a bell?

Gul will start to gather up some of the valuables lying around, leaving it to someone else to retrieve the document.

OOC: Religion for ritual I imagine.

You find 400 gold pieces as well as an extremely well crafted sets Thieves, Tinkers, and Woodworkers tools (providing an additional +1 to such checks).

Gritting his teeth, Gul took a closer look at the arrangement of the pose, the details of the coins and so on, and tried to recall what he had heard about ritual sacrifices.

[sblock=Religion]You know that kobolds and dragons are related, and perhaps this particular imagery is intended to evoke something about dragons, but it's not clear.[/sblock]

Even Bell can tell that the thieves' tools are special -- the skeleton key looks like a skeleton, after all. But though her cousins would love them, she has never had much interest in such things, and leaves them for others. Instead, she looks at the bizarre sacrifice of the kobold. "That's not right," she thinks, as she approaches it and reaches in to remove the message carefully from the pocket.
