(IC - D&D 3.5) Rathan's Problem Down Under

Curious Berrek

Berrek is ready for signs that Eltyr sees same as he saw. He prepares to catch Eltyr in case he falls.

After Eltyr started blinking again, Berrek eagerly asks:
"So, how was it? What did you see? What do you make of it?"

Thinking that they understand each other, the elemental nods its agreement with the druidess. "The earth shakes to arrange into balance after."

As you all get ready to leave the barn you note it's a rather nice day save for the hazy sky in the direction of the starfall. It's been hazy that way sense the impact but is slowly starting to die down as far as you can tell over the past two months sense the starfall happened.

You leave the barn and continue your conversations as need be without much interference from anyone on the roads or anything blocking your path.

(If you want to stop and hunt what little game there is, survey the land, or anything to this nature just let me know otherwise consider yourself moving on down the road towards the starfall without interruption from anyone or anything for at least two thirds the day).

As the sun sets low in the sky you would suspect it's about 6 hours past the noonday sun and about time to stop and eat or hunt. You made it into the rolling hills and by your map you're about five miles from the Border of Lorken and The Scorched Northland Territories. In the distance you can also make out one hill that's vastly larger than the rest of the low lying rolling terrain, and considering the hill is entirely black as opposed to the rest of the dull greens and yellows of the plains, it rather sticks out on the landscape.

(I need Knowledge (Local) or Knowledge (History) checks DC 15 from those with these skills... Knowledge (Geography) would also work but at a higher CD of 20 as you all save for the map are rather unfamiliar with the area really)

“Ah, yes, everything’s fine Anton, just an unexpected reaction to my probing,” Eltyr remarks, rubbing his eyes as he deals with the after effects of the magic, “It caught me somewhat off guard, as the magic contained within the artifact otherwise seems to be quite faint.”

“As for what I saw Berrek, not much beyond indeterminate faint magic I'm afraid, before what seemed a defensive reaction to my probing ... though I can tell you the magics within seem to be older than any I’ve ever heard or read of. I don’t know what that means exactly, but it’s certainly interesting ... I can’t wait to try probing again once I’ve gained a little more knowledge,” Eltyr grins, obviously keen to try again at some point.

He then pauses and gives Berrek’s last question some more thought, before adding with a smile, “You know, considering what I experienced, I’m wondering if the artifacts mirror some part of our own personality or thoughts, and if so whether that’s a means of defence or a sign of them becoming one with us...”

OOC: Eltyr's Knowledge (History) check = 18 (1d20+10)

"Steady Menhir my friend. I am sure that we will be able to sort things out"

Once Lidia is outside of the barn, she will spend a few minutes checking to see what the weather is going to do in the next couple of days..

Lidia walks down the road with the others. As before Shadow will fly ahead looking for people, monsters and game. Unless there is some game near the road, she will not stop to hunt but keep on going until it is time to stop and make camp. She will then send Shadow out to make a good sweep of the area while she searches for a suitable camping spot. Once she finds a camping spot she will tell the others. "This looks like a good place to stop. I suggest we make camp here. I have sent Shadow to check the area and he will also report if there is anything worth hunting.

[sblock="OOC"]Take 10 on a weather check (Survival (10+14=24)) to predict the weather for the next 48 hours.

Take 10 on survival (10+14=24) for locating a good camping spot.[/sblock]

Knowledge (local) (1d20+2=5)

Berrek ranges in front and sides of the party. He tries to keep tabs on Menhir's movement to know when he's around.

When party prepares for the camp he returns.

[sblock=Artifact discussion]
"Remember yesterday when I drained that spell from you? I used it imeediately and my cloud almost struck me blind with its discharge. I didn't know whether it's some kind of strange reaction of my spell because of starfall or property of the artifact itself.

Now I feel little bit better."

Artifact Discussion:

“Yes, I remember Berrek, and I’m glad you feel better about your experience, but did you notice anything else about the magic or get any inkling it was reacting to you yourself at all, and not the detection spell, before the discharge?” Eltyr asks.

"I didn't notice any reaction as I studied you earlier this morning. I saw faint magical auras from all of your artifacts, but none blinded me. All excude faint unknown type of magic. In all other respects, my experience with it equals yours.

Hm, do you think it would be same unknown magic seen in starfall after effects? Worth trying next time we have the opportunity. I spent my detect magic for today so I can try again tomorrow."

[sblock=Eltyr:] As you were all in the great hall.. just before you got attacked by the hobgoblins.. you distinctly remember a villager mention to you that if the road you were taking leads you by Lord Rakas' burial mound you should pay your respects to him as he was a great man that did many good deeds for his people, much like your party is trying to do for the people now.. you have an suspicion that that black mound may be his final resting grounds... though it is definitely not marked on your map as such... in fact seems there is a larger mound there on the map with a dot seeming to state SOMETHING is there.. but to what it does not say... [/sblock]

Lidia predicts with the winds and the temperature as they are now no storms should be on their way.. or at the very least if one happened to spring up on them would be carried in an opposite direction than their travel..... a small cluster of trees with low lying brush a few hundred feet off the road and down a small goat path is visible as a nice camping spot for the night....

The earth elemental parallels its companions' winding path across the inhospitable landscape throughout the day. It plods along, often below the surface of the earth, its featureless stone head and crystal studded shoulders occasionally emerging from the ground like a cresting wave. The elemental shares few if any words with its companions, apparently uninterested in their ongoing arcane analysis of their eldritch treasures.

As it moves through the earth, Menhir identifies natural water springs and scoops up any root vegetables growing beneath the surface and rises to offer them to the druidess as they travel. In this way, the earth helps to provide nourishment for the organic creatures living upon its surface.

OOC: Survival +1, attempting to aid Lidia.
