D&D 5E (IC) Fitz's Folly

Legend
"The Pterafolk (if that is what we have seen), are not nocturnal, and would likely avoid flying in the worst of this rain." said Qawasha with conviction.

"Then we shall press on." decided Wulf Rygor after a moment's consideration, "But we will split into two groups. We will allow nature and ability to decide who is in what group. If less than half the group is ahead of you; try to keep up with the leader. If less than half the group is behind; wait for the last person. I expect that we will have two groups created shortly."

The group finished their meal and set out, with Wulf leading the way at a determined pace.

OOC: Okay, I'd like a few rolls and we will find out how things go. Everyone needs to give me Athletics and a Con Save. Athletics will let us know if any complications arise and con saves will let us know how well you handle it.

Not sure if any of his Monk abilities factor in. Increased land speed and slow fall are potentials at least?

Miss Imogen works at the climb, and while the mud is thick, and the dirt is loose, so that at times it was a challenge to distinguish the two, she persevered. To her surprise, she was no longer cold, not even in the wet. But she could take the moisture in her hand and turn it into a kind of claw, an ice claw, and scoop out handholds in the soft earth, and pack some of it together to provide a more stable foothold. Freeze it, move it. This was suddenly an intuitive gesture, she discovered, and certainly those below her on the climb would be seeing the icicles falling. Yet, this was not something she felt a need to hide. Though she couldn't explain it, it seemed as natural to her that this should be possible. Freeze the ground, or push part of it aside, build footholds and platforms to help with the climb.

Well, this is unexpected, she thought.

OOC: Con save: [roll0]
Athletics: [roll1]. EDIT: This should have been 1d20-1, and so make it a 2.

Use Mold Earth as helpful.

“Bluidy rain,” Dellrak muttered as it dripped down his beard as he surveyed the rest of the climb up the cliff. “Safer t’ ‘ead back doon.” But Wulf apparently wanted to keep going. “Best t’ put those wot can see in the dark in the lead, then.”

They started the ascent once more. At least it was good, solid rock.

Legend
Dellrak set off at a brisk pace, with Wulf behind him. They were followed not far behind by Harb and Chrysagon, with Weed skipping along just behind them.(Though it was clear he was struggling to keep up, with his little legs.)

The second group was led by Rodrigo and Qawasha, and followed by Miss Imogen and Tarri. Kasqa had taken the rear to help his wife, but he was struggling as well. Through no fault of their own, the second group was beset with worse obstacles than the first, as mud and loose rock washed over the trail before them.

An hour in, the two groups were split by a distance of a few hundred yards. An hour more and the distance had doubled. This was when two events occurred at nearly the same time.

Dellrak and Wulf were rounding an outcropping of solid rock when they very nearly ran into a Pterafolk. The creature was perched just to the side of the trail, dangling its wings off of the cliff to allow the rain to run off them, with its long-beaked face drooped low. Perhaps it had been sleeping that way. At any rate, they had startled it and it spread its wings -- a span of twenty feet -- and leapt off of the cliff with a cry. It was gone very quickly, diving low and circling around the arc of the cliff face and out of sight.

The other group had worse trouble. They were crossing a bit of the trail where mud had washed across and it was very slippery, when a large rock from the cliff above fell loose. It struck the mud-path and slid, scattering the group, then plunged off of the cliff to a long fall where it landed in the depression that had been the campsite of the night before.

When the chaos ended it was discovered that Tarri had disappeared in the scramble. After a moment of panic she was found, having fallen a short distance to a ledge. Miss Imogen and Kasqa climbed down to her while Rodrigo and Qawasha held the rope, and she was rescued, but she was muddy, bloody, and exhausted by the time they neared the top of the cliff.

By then, the sun was low in the west, and the cliff (which faced east) was deep in shadow. The first group had made it to the top and were watching the trail for the second group, while also watching the skies for any sign of the Pterafolk.

OOC: Let's get a perception roll from everyone. Everyone in the second group has disadvantage (you are still down the trail a short way and your vision is blocked by the cliff). Normally I'd go the other way and give advantage to the people on look-out, but not this time.

Chrysagon could enlighten the path with Kelemvor's light but they would be easy targets on that cliff.
