At the top of the cliff path there were piles of skulls that marked the final bend in the trail, which then spread out into a flat plateau dotted with overgrown ruins. More skull-piles marked a path of standing stones that led to a stone archway carved with animal totems. There had once stood large wooden doors in the archway, but all that was left of them were the rusted iron hinges. The skulls were bleached by the sun and picked clean of all flesh.

Chrysagon was waiting along the trail for the others and Wulf and Harb were standing on the rocks of the last bend searching the sky for trouble. Dellrak was inspecting the trail between the standing stones and Weed had disappeared into the foliage.

Rodrigo and Qawasha were rounding the second-to-last bend, with Miss Imogen, Tarri, and Kasqa not far behind, when a group of six Pterafolk swooped around the cliff from the southwest, using the shadows of the cliff and the bend of the rock for cover.

OOC: Anyone who rolled below 11 is going to be surprised, I'm afraid. (This means, not so much that you're surprised, as you probably expected it, but that you don't see them in time before they swoop in). Dellrak still needs to roll, but I think that makes only Harb and a few NPCs get a turn in Round One.

Location: Cliffs of Mbala; Encounter: Terror Folk

Begin Round One

GM: So Dellrak can go if he makes a Perception of 11+. Harb can go right away.
Everyone else, hold up. (though feel free to post an RP bit, if you like.)

OOC: Notes on the Map: The cliff on the left is 30 feet down to the trail to the right (further as you go downward on the map). The larger cliff is 60 feet down (and increases as you go upward, if you follow me). The switchback where Rodrigo is is a full 100 feet lower than where Chrysagon is. Going up counts as moving on difficult terrain. Maps work better wide than tall, but I wanted north to be north and I felt the feeling of climbing upward works better when up is up.

Harb had had a few minutes to recover from the climb and while waiting for the others to catch up he leaned his quarterstaff against one of the nearby skull piles. This freed him up to string up his bow and take watch over the approach. He'd been the first of their party to spot the approaching Pterafolk and called out a warning to the others before taking a long range shot into the flock. The range combined with the sporadic movements of their flight had the combined effect in his aim though, and slipped ineffectively past them.

The monk though, wasted no time trying to see the result of his shot. He headed through the trees hoping to reach the relative cover of some shaped stones he could see ahead.

OOC: Shortbow(Disadvantage): 2D20.LOW(1)+5 = [8, 6]+5 = 11
1D6+3 = [6]+3 = 9

Move: Hoping to reach H17, Not sure if the trees are difficult terrain though.

There was a pain at the base of her neck, and Miss Imogen regretted her experimentation on the climb. Yes, it had made the climb easier, and yes they had reached the top safely. But the pounding at the back of her skull was like a muscle that had been exercised after being left untested for too long. It ached, and her brain limped forward in time with her steps.

By the time she noticed the attackers, it was too late.

Harb & Wulf vs Petafolk1-3

Harb and Wulf saw the Pterafolk coming and ran along the highest ridge to provide covering fire for the group below. They each took ranging shots with their shortbows which fell short of their targets and then they moved into the trees. Harb reached a fallen wall and ducked behind a large stone, where he watched as the Pterafolk swooped low, going after the lower group.

The first of the Pterafolk dove on Rodrigo, scratching athim with its foot-claws and thrusting its sword-like beak down at him while back-beating its enormous wings. The effect was terribly frightening and it let out a high-pitched squeal that was quite unnerving.

The second of the creatures was armed with a spear, and it dove on Miss Imogen, thrusting the spear deep into her side.

The third dove at Tarri, but Kasqa stepped in the way, blocking its scratching claws. Still, the creature reached its long neck over Kasqa's head and struck Tarri down with its beak. As fiendish as the beak appeared, it seemed like the creature pulled its blow at the last and delivered a non-lethal blow that knocked the cartographer to the ground.

GM: They're nasty. I still need Dellrak's perception and turn (if he gets one).
Damage Taken:
(BGs) None;
(PCs) Rodrigo 5 (& Frightened until end of your next turn);
Miss Imogen 18 (Crit, also Frightened);

Dellrak stomped in the rain at the top of the cliff as they waited for the others. They’d gotten quite separated. He’d nearly pulled out his crossbow and shot that damn flying lizard man that had startled them as they reached the top, but he let it fly off and kept his eyes peeled on the rainy sky for any more of them in case of trouble.

He started to eye the trail of skulls warily, and completely missed the Pterafolk that swooped in on them.

Rodrigo had been feeling pretty good. He felt like Chrysagon's blessing had never truly left him - sure he had fallen behind but he was just being careful. He didn't even feel tired. Things were looking up!

He was completely caught off-guard by the attack. He tumbled and evade the worse of it, but still was hit. "By the gods!!!" was all he had the time to say - or think.

Dellrak & Weed

Dellrak had turned from watching the skies to warily eye the skull-piles when the Pterafolk attacked. Weed heard the commotion and he shuffled through the underbrush to take up a position in a tree near the standing-stone path that lead to the former gates. He was nearly impossible to make-out, looking much like a part of the large-leaved tree.

Pterafolk 4 & 5

Three more Pterafolk swooped down on the lower group. Two dove on Qawasha, scratching their claws and pecking at him with their large beaks. He tried to block with his staff, but was overwhelmed by so many attacks and was bloodied and terrified.

Kasqa vs Pterafolk 6

The last of the Pterafolk flew overhead to land on the trail furthest down the cliff. It walked forward on all fours, using its wings as front legs and it grabbed Tarri in its beak and tried to pull her away. Kasqa leapt into action, thrusting his spear at the creature and shouting something that must have been "Back! in native Cultan.
