D&D 5E (IC) Scourge of Daggerford

The wise words pulled Dandin up a bit. And he nodded in acceptance. But pressed on with his own arguement as well. "True, and that's why you'll find me standing towards the rear whenever possible. I can stand and fight when necessary, but my talents are more of a supportive nature."

The halfling flashed another grin before he found another apple dish and scooped quite a bit of it onto his plate.

Snake looked up from his fish, “I can fight, I’ve done work as a hired guard before.” Snake grabbed another chunk of fish.

“But I would not object to us all learning to fight together, . . .Very important! Things fall apart when a group doesn't stick together,” Snake said as he shoved the fish in his mouth.

"Pardon me, Sir Isteval. May I speak?

I have a formal request to formulate: If it doesn't interfere with any security measure currently in force, I would be pleased to be informed about any result the questioning of the prisoners may provide. It will certainly help us in the elaboration of our strategy."

The knight shook his head in frustration, but again did his best to avoid overly criticizing the Duke, "I am afraid that the prisoners were ordered hanged at first light this morning. If anything was learned from them before the act was carried out, I'm afraid that I don't know it. Someone should speak to the marshal, Sherlen Miller - she would know if they learned anything."

The evening continued, with questions, conversations, and stories. The newly-formed, unnamed company of adventurers got to know their patrons: Sir Isteval was kind and thoughtful and had had many adventures. Sir Darfin was friendly and well-travelled and knew the area for many hundreds of years. Shalendra was quiet and reserved (and perhaps a bit aloof) but knew much about magic. Jekk was loud and coarse, not of the lofty station of the others.

Finally, the halfling girls brought the final dish: a plate of sweet pastries filled with various fruits. (Dandin grabbed the apple one before anyone else could take it.)

"I am very glad to have met you all." said Sir Darfin as he finished his pastry, "When I am in town I can be found at my townhouse across Hill Road from Morninglow Tower. Otherwise I am often at my Floshin Estate a day's travel north. You are welcome to seek me out at either place should you need anything."

“The kitty cat ‘ast the roight o’ it,” Angis agreed with Snake. “‘Tis important t’ learn ‘ow t’ work t’gether an’ wot we all c’n dae.”

The evening progressed and started to wind down. Angis was suitably sated by the good food and ale. “Sae wot’s the plan?” Angis asked. “Get tha’ boat fixed up? I say two hours after first light we meet up at the trainin’ grounds? Or ‘ead upriver an’ see where the gobbies might’ve beached their boat? Find a trail.”’

"If ye be wantin' to 'ead upriver before yer boat's doon repairs, I bet ye that Janos feller will take ye at least part-way if ye ask 'im." suggested Jekk. "Or ye culd walk. Aboot ten miles east ye'll run inta the Vale Ridge, but the Dwarves of Illefarn cut a road oop the cliffs in the uld days. Ye culd take the uld road t'Illefarn, at least 'til it 'eads into the mountains. Ye kin see the river from oop high fer at least ten, mebbe twoonty miles."

Tommi concluded the evening's banquet and was quite full, but not as drunk as he might normally had been had he not been chastened. That was fine. He needed to learn. He listens to Angus's suggestion. Yes, teamwork would be important, but really he worked on instinct more than actual ability, and lacked any of the formal training all the other heroes had.

Still, he can make an offer. "Once we receive our payment, there are a few purchases I would like to make. Then, if it's alright, I can go speak to the marshal to learn what had happened with the prisoners. I expect I'd be ready to leave by noon tomorrow, if it came to that."

He smiles, his head reeling from the position in which he finds himself, among the Doughty Daggerfordians.

“Th’old dwarven road sounds like jus’ the thing,” Angis had to agree with Jekk. “If we leave at noon, we’ll get there right before sundoon. We’ll ‘ave t’ spend the night oot there. But I reckon we need t’ gear up anyway, sae there’s nae ‘elpin’ it.”

The evening wound down with a basic plan in place.

As the halfling girls cleared plates away, Sir Isteval presented each of the newly christened (at least as far as Tommi was concerned) Doughty Daggerfordian Adventuring Company members a writ note and said, "Present these notes at the Sword Coast Traders' Bank, and Lady Belinda Anteos will give you the money in coin of your choosing. I'm sure she will be happy to create for you an account if you wish to keep the balance of the funds safely at the bank. It is up to you."

"Aye look forrard t'hearin' the bards tell yer tales in the taverns!" said Jekk.

"Good travels to you." said Sir Darfin, sincerely but somewhat enviously.

After that it was all fare-thee-wells and the group made their way out to the street.

“Thank ye kindly, Sir Isteval,” Angis said as he was handed the bank note. And then they were headed out into the dark of Daggerford. The dwarf looked to his companions. “Well, seems we’ve got ourselves a patron. I guess ‘tis best we no’ waste ‘is guid favor. Shall we meet at the tavern at an hour t’ noon wi’ our gear?” he suggested. “Dunnae overpack. Ye’ll be needin’ t’ carry it all. Guid night.”
