D&D 5E (IC) Vault of the Dracolich (Dispensables)

GM: Once everyone is again up and running, what would you like to do? There is some sign that the Trogs have fortified the tunnel to the rest of their caves (with string made from gut, covered in sharply carved small animal bones criss-crossing the tunnel) and probably have a large group of guards waiting for you.

OOC: I assume we need to get through the cave system to get to the temple. Are there any secret passageways we can look for?.
Maybe Pyrus can 'talk' to them again, asking for free passage and maybe offering them some half-cooked food (snake). Maybe Pyrus could also ask them how far away the temple is and if there is any other hazards on the way. We will leave them alone and they will not see us again (probably!). Hey, we could even leave the loot behind.

Affected by: Comprehend Languages (1 hour) | Conditions: None[/sblock] A bit surprised by the fact that the surviving troglodytes hadn't gathered reinforcements and counterattacked while he and his companions had rested, Devan pondered what their passivity signified. Do they not realize that they outnumber us? he wondered. Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise. He decided not to question their good fortune and instead, with his Book of Shadows in hand, began reading one of its pages. The arcane script scrawled within it took some time to recite since the pronunciation of each tongue-twisting syllable had to be precise, or else the incantation would be spoiled.

Once he was finished, Devan noticed the cleric's search of the cavern. If there were no other passageways, and it didn't look like there were, then their only option would be to take the northern tunnel. He slowly approached to within twenty feet of the troglodytes' makeshift barrier, trying to look as non-threatening as possible, and stopped. "We wish to pass! We only seek the dragon!" he shouted, unsure of whether or not the creatures would understand Common. But if they tried to reply, at least he would know what they were saying even if they spoke in their native tongue. And if they attacked, the cagey Inquisitor had a shield spell at the ready.

Into the dim light at the bottom of the tunnel a wizened troglodyte face appeared. It squinted at Devan. "Pass? Pass? You come to us. Kill us. We tell you go. Human door is on other side of mountain. There you find dragon! Hail the Dragon! Reborn God Dragon! All must fear and worship!

Bob felt mostly useless at this point. He watched Sesto examining the walls and Devan perform some sort of ritual reminiscent of the old tribal shaman from his village.

Then he followed the priest and hung back at the entrance to the cavern to keep an eye on his new friend. And should the need arise, raise arms in his defense.

Affected by: Comprehend Languages (1 hour) | Conditions: None[/sblock] At least one of the troglodytes understood Common which was fortunate. Devan stood his ground and explained to the one who'd spoken to him, "The fighting was a regrettable misunderstanding. We initially tried talking to your guards, to ask for, and sort of demand, safe passage. But nevermind that. Your people attacked my people first. We were simply defending ourselves. You cannot fault us for that."

He sighed wearily, but invoked Lathander's guidance anyway. "Let us start over. We just want to pass through your tunnels. A very simple request. So aside from us leaving completely, which isn't an option, what else would you like from us? Perhaps we can come to a mutually beneficial agreement. How would you like to take the dragon's place? You could then rule all of your tunnels and be worshipped by your people."

While the troglodyte elder considered his words, Devan whispered to his companions, "He may go for it. But in case he doesn't, be ready."

"I be Dragon? I not even be Chief. I am low. Chief is High. Dragon is Reborn God King! All Hail Dragon!" the wizened Trog prostrated himself, "If you seek to pass here to worship Dragon, you must speak with Chief. If you not kill us, we bring you to Chief. He is big and powerful! Do not fight him! He will decide if you live! If you die! You speak to him?"
