A summary of events so far...
Aedon and Nissa have been sent by the headmaster at Blackthorn Academy in Kingsport to escort J'hanna home to her village near Silverport to bury her friend. While there, they are to investigate the strange blight that has come upon the outlaying villages, including J'hanna's own home.
Maighan has left her home in the Central Marches to find the answers about her elven heritage that she so desperately seeks. She's also left behind a broken man who has failed to profess his love for her. Would she have stayed if she had known?
Garrison, now unemployed, has offered his services to J'hanna and Aedon and their quest. Justice, too, after a brief relapse into the drink, has offered his services. He is indebted to Nissa for bailing him out of some trouble with an over-sized barkeep in Silverport.
Andert and Redis, two fellow humans from J'hanna's village (which has yet to be named), have met up with the party in Silverport and are providing escort into the blighted lands away from the city proper. Is the blight thickens, and overgrown vines and brambles take over the landscape and creep their way onto the narrowing road, the party encounters Mortimer Montri, a dirty gnome with bad teeth, and his companion, the half-ogre Gronde.
Gronde's pet cockatrice, Clara, is frightened by something in the wind, and Gronde takes her from her cage to soothe her. Nissa gets too close to an old scarecrow and stirs up an insect swarm, which promptly attacks her. The scarecrow, too, comes to life, but Aedon's quick actions obliterate it before it can cause any harm. Perhaps when this is over someone will reason that scarecrows aren't suppose to randomly come to life. Or perhaps not...
The cockatrice Clara becomes frightened and uncontrollable, escaping from Gronde's grip and pecking at Mortimer Montri, petrifying where he stands. Gronde chases the beast before it can cause any more damage, but not before Clara nips at Andert, also petrifying him.
Justice finally puts an end to the ridiculous scene and cuts down the cockatrice. This enrages Gronde, who then turns that rage on to Justice.
Meanwhile the insect swarm ravages Maighan and makes its way to one of the horses pulling your wagon.
