Is the DM always right? No.
Is the DM's job to be right? No.
The DM's job is to make the game go smoothly. His job is to make the mechanics of the game and the world flow so that the players can enjoy this creation and have fun.
Being right is not necessary to this goal.
The player's job is to explore this world, and to have fun, and to help the other players (including the DM) have fun.
It does not matter if the DM is right, or the player is right. It matters if the player insistance on being right comes at the expense of the fun of the group AND the DM. If this is the case, then the player is wrong, as he is not doing his job.
These sorts of things can be arbitrated later, when it does not come at the expense of the game. The DM has the right to arbritrate the rules, and has the right to make mistakes provided the players are having fun. Mistakes can be corrected.
You can take back mistakes. You can't take back time wasted.
The DM's -job- in these cases is to end the discussion and get on with the game. If he is doing so, he is -right- in doing so. And if the rule 'The DM is Always Right(TM)' is necessary for him to do his job in certain groups, then the rule is right.
Simple as that.
