Item Destruction

So my 3.5 game has reached the point where the elven evoker has fireball. Am I understanding the rules for item destruction correctly? The way it seems to play out, a moderate use of fireball (say, 5d6 and an average damage roll) is going to destroy just about everything the target is carrying, even if it's magic, even if it makes its save, with the exception of perhaps armor and some metal weapons.

Is this correct? Is this the "drawback" of using fireball (aside from the area effect issue, which is so much easier to moderate than 1e fireballs)?
