Well look, I mean, all the same class could be fun. I considered doing an all wizards game. I mean... with something like that it's easy for everyone to be part of the same organization. Just make sure if they are all clerics, they are all clerics of the same god.

The group must either all be the same race or the same class.

What would you advocate for?

Assume the DM is capable of providing a game that would work for the groups choice.

everyone the same race....it offers a lot more variety then same class as class is way more defining.

I would go for all dwarf if pressed for a race. All one class might be a tougher call.... can't say for sure what I would want.

I think a better variant idea to this would be a more general theme.

Like an all nature theme... only druids, rangers, and scouts with nature type races like elves, dryads, etc.

Or mountaineering group... only Dwarves, Gnomes, Goliaths with mostly warrior classes.

Barbarian Tribe group... All characters have function in tribe (Druids, Rangers, Barbarians, Shaman)

Or all Arcane ... Mages, Warmages, Sorcerers, etc in a group. Like a mage guild on a mission.

The themed groups can be very effective in their niche, while creating interesting RP when out of their typical environment.

I really like the themed idea too; I've often wanted to do a party that's the D&D equivalent of Arnie's squad in the first Predator movie; guerilla warriors par excellence with rangers, scouts, druids and maybe a rogue allowed.

In general, I'd go for all the same (non-human) race as that would give the most character to the campaign. However, the all the same class option would also be interesting in a non-standard campaign. A war campaign for fighters. A thieves guild campaing if thieves. All clerics of the same order might be interesting or run an all wizards campaign like something from Harry Potter as all the characters are in a magic school and have various adventures there from 0-level until they graduate at a level suitable for your campaign world. Still, I'd think that multi-classign would be necessary in most cases.

I think both options could be a lot of fun. I've always wanted to run an all-rogue campaign. As someone mentioned already, multiclassing really expands your options.

Heck, I'd even play an all-wizard campaign. You could all be part of the same guild or school (a la Harry Potter).

Another idea I'd love to try is an all-halfling campaign in which the PC's are members of a travelling high-wire/acrobatic act. They go to different cities and perform but they are all thieves as well. They do some jobs and then leave town.

The cool thing about an "all" campaign is that they lend themselves to instant campaign arcs by their nature. I'm also not opposed to some campaign restrictions either. It gets everyone on the same page right off the bat and the group is bound by a common motivation.

Same race.
More flexible, better team-synergy options.
