THE WORST KEPT SECRET IN COMICS

You know for something Marvel wanted to keep quiet, they didn't do a very good job, did they? Originally broken on the JoeQuesada message boards, then followed up on at Millarworld for the past two months or so, yes, clearly, Joss Whedon is the new "New X-Men" writer. Or at least one of them. And here's why it matters.

"Buffy The Vampire Slayer" was basically X-Men: The TV Series. In terms of relationships, story construct, plot devices and dialogue, Chris Claremont and John Byrne's "Uncanny X-Men" proved a strong influence, as did related series such as Alan Moore, Jamie Delano and Alan Davis' "Captain Britain." Joss can not only write X-Men well, he's been doing it for the last seven years. Still doing it with Angel and Firefly. And loads of people watched it around the world. So now he gets to bring some of them to the X-Men - a title they should feel very at home reading.

As for impact - when JMS took over Amazing Spider-Man, he doubled sales from 50,000 to 100,000. Kevin Smith did a similar feat with Daredevil and Green Arrow. This is the test - can Whedon, with a larger and more diverse fanbase than both, perform a similar feat to the 130,000 selling New X-Men? It's entirely possible. With "Ultimate Fantastic Four" recently getting over 200,000 for its first issue, the possibility of a content-fuelled comics boom may well be a reality, and 2004 could kick it off.

Whedon on X-Men has been a dream for Joe Quesada - and something he's been pursuing since before Grant Morrison took over the title. Joe Casey believed himself to have been the second choice to Joss while Grant Morrison was on the X-Men. And finally, years later, Joe Quesada has got his man. However, it seems there's something to come first...

While still not confirmed by Marvel high-ups, the rumour seems
to be gaining momentum.

Meaning he won't be doing the art for the alleged Whedon run? If not, has it been announced who will be replacing him?

And I apologize, but would you mind giving me a brief synopsis of what characters are featured in New X-Men and what makes the series unique? I might go ahead and jump in for a little while with that kind of talent on board.

I'm not a comic book follower, but wasnt there supposed to be a Buffy the Animated series in production from Joss.

I know Joss is touted as being one of the most idea filled people on the planet but between Firefly movie, Angel, Buffy the cartoon, and writting an X-man run, and his son,(let alone his wife), were will the time come from?

I can see Joss doing a limited X-man run, maybe the size of Fray, anything longer and I suspect cancellation of other projects, of course I'm speaking out my arse here so take it w/ a grain of sodium.

Cyclops, Phoenix (Jean Grey), Wolverine (Logan/James Howlett), Beast (fully mutated into a blue "Beauty & the Beast" escapee), Professor X. The White Queen was there for a while, as was a healing mutant known as Xorn
