Yeah, I read that thread. The thing is, this is, as a wise man just said on another message board recently, this is, essentially, just a hobby. You do it for fun. If it ceases to be fun, find another hobby, find another aspect of your hobby that appeals to you. Agonizing over whether more or less detail is more or less imaginative seems akin to trying to determine what is universally funny - it all boils down to personal taste. There is no right answer, and trying to assert that there is seems futile to me. One can say: "this type of play is less conducive to me exercising my imagination," but saying "this type of play is less conducive to the exercising of the imagination in general" seems very presumptuous.

Yes Colonel,

What you state about opinion and perception is so. However, that it is the writer's opinion should be a given. What percentage of the posts on any board are not simply not just that, someone stating their opinion? No need for warning labels, simply the exercise of discernment, I submit.

Cheers,
Gary

Note: I didn't say the chap that posted the other thread was correct, only that his perspective was similar to my own;)

But see that is the difference , when I post something or say some thing it is fact, but when some one else post it is just their opinion :)

As you can tell from my count, I never post here, and rarely lurk. Dragonsfoot was down so I went exploring…

I have not played LA for a few months, but having played for a number of sessions I can say our group has had nothing less then an extremely good time playing it. There is a lot more to this game then a person can ascertain from the pigeonholed term “rules-lite”.

Some have suggested the vagueness of the game is bothersome, but this is one of its strengths. Having some of the skills overlap in definition is actually ingenious, seeming to give an Avatar a much more round, flexible, thorough feel then a straight up, knife-sliced distinction found in a more rigid game.

This is a game where you use common sense, and the right answer is the one the DM offers. There are guidelines that explain how to adjudicate within the context of the system, but there is not necessary one correct way of moderating. This is not confusing, it is liberating! Don’t misunderstand, it doesn’t become a battle of wits; the players vs. the DM. In reality, this game is equally liberating for the players as well as the DM.

My only complaint (well…there may be a few more…I need to play again…) is the lack of support. I don’t have time to create adventures completely from scratch, and converting from other systems is a twofold problem: 1)Time and 2)They lack the LA “feel” somewhat (IMHO, of course). However, the material is all there, hundreds of monsters, a few modules and the Lejendary Earth setting, all waiting to be expanded on if a person has the inclination (and time…again…grrr!).

The game is probably a polar opposite of 3e in terms of game mechanics, but if you’ve never tried it, I don’t believe you can accurately imagine the experience.

I'll just add that I did see the game played by Gary and his weekly gaming group.

Brace for shameless plug impact...

Say, Crazy Mage, don't you tell that story in great detail in your new print zine, A Gaming Chrestomathy? Why, I think you do! In fact, that zine is being mailed out with my own rag, Iron Rations, next Monday.

Check it!

PS: Don't hurt yourself shovelling all that snow, Mage. ;)

Careful about putting words in other peoples' mouths, or you'll lose that arm clean up to the elbow... :D

Why Steve! I'd never dream of putting words in your mouth. You haven't lacked for words since this thread started.

BTW, nice Jerry Reed nod there. Gotta give you props for that.

I am simply taking your argument to its logical conclusion. If codification is everything, than there are many popular, respected, even heralded games which are, in fact, crap. These are games so far away from complete codification its ludacris. These are games that rely on an active GM, someone who is very much a participant in the game, not simply a mouthpiece for NPCs and whipping up encounters. I don't consider this putting words in your mouth, only demonstrating that your argument is, at best subjective.

I've never dismissed your opinions as invalid. Those instances where you are mistaken I've attempted to correct.

Sure, the players' guide could (and perhaps should) list those Abilities that provide a capacity for swimming, diving, literacy, etc. There are about 12 pages of the Lejend Masters book that I feel could/should be transplanted to the players book in the case of a revised edition. But the information is there, and can easily supplied by the GM. And those players who like to pre-plan, as you say, would certainly be the first to do so. :)

Guess I'm just the wrong kind of roleplayer for this kind of game.

Maybe so. Not everyone likes poker, either.

Well Gary, maybe you should send Tom a comp, autographed copy of the LA Player book. Nothing builds loyalty like free goodies. ;)

Well, Golem Joe...

Right you are abot freebies:D

I did post a link to this thread for Joe, and if he drops by and reads this far, then he'll get a free copy for sure. All he needs to do is email his shipping address to Forgey or me.

Cheers,
Gary
