M&M: San Angelo Issue #2

San Angelo

Sunday, March 2nd, 2003

Everyone gathers outside the Helix building. Sawbones and the four armored men have been taken into custody, having been dumped into one of the PART vans, which has already left the scene. The police have entered the building, along with another PART squad, to process the crime scene.

After working out ride assignments for those that need them, everyone departs, heading in the direction of Lake Oro to the northeast. (OOC: I know that Spyder hitched a ride with Centurion and Ringmaster made a cosmic flying carpet to take whoever else needed a ride. I'm assuming that you are all flying with Ringmaster and Centurion so that you'll all get there at the same time. If this is an incorrect assumption, feel free to correct me. ORCA's van should be okay at Helix until he returns.)

Lake Oro is a reservoir that is a key source of drinking water for the city and a popular recreation attraction. It lies northeast of San Angelo, along the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. (OOC: If I haven't mentioned it before, San Angelo is in Southern California, but it is not a coastal city. It is close to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains.)

The Del Oro River flows down from the Sierra Nevada's. Oro Dam blocks the Del Oro just northeast of the city and forms the Lake Oro reservoir behind it. Below the dam, the river continues on through downtown San Angelo. The river is popular with rafters, and whitewater enthusiasts find the stretch of river above Lake Oro the most challenging. At this time of year, on such a warm day, there are bound to be people at the reservoir fishing and boating. Swimers and rafters won't make their appearances until early summer.

The closest town to Lake Oro is Canfield, a town of abot 12,000 people. Also nearby is the California State Prison, Canfield. Hundreds of thousands of people make their way though Canfield during the summer while vacationing at Lake Oro. A few miles outside of Canfield is the Canfield Indian Rancheria, a 20 acre reservation for Native Americans. There are many old abandoned gold mines in the hills around the lake.

After a short flight, you all arrive at one of the main parking lots for the lake, directed there by Ringmaster's sidekick, Tyke. He waits there as you fly in, leaning against a stretch limo. Once you have all landed, he says, "I followed them as best I could. They disappeared half an hour ago but they are around here somewhere. I saw them pass over the lake, heading towards the hills."

Ringmaster nods to Tyke. "THanks for following them. You want to change and then perhaps join us? It could be a lot of fun." The Ringmaster smiles at his friend and allows him to enter the limo to change if he wishes to. While Tyke's getting ready, he turns to the others. "If they're going into the hills, my guess is that they have some sort of hide out in these old mines. That, or maybe what ever they stole can be released into the drinking water. Either way, I think we need to get on this fast as people may be in danger."

Spyder nods his head in agreement... but he stays in the back of the ground and looks at his feet a lot, to shy to really talk with all these people around.

“I guess we should start be searching the hills.” Centurion suggests. “Orchid, you should keep your mental link up so we can stay in contact. If anyone finds anything yell out immediately, don’t try anything on your own.” Centurion says looking over at Shade. “I will do a slow flyby over the area, my vision should allow me to see into some of the mines. Anyone have any other suggestions?”

"Yeah. I'm good in the dark, so I could get started looking through the mines too. It should be dark enough down there that I wont get cornered or anything. Shade resumes shadow form and gladly escapes the heat of the sun.

"Plus most stuff goes right through me."

"As Centurion has the sky, I'll take the reservoir. Just in case." ORCA pauses for input from the others before making his way to the lake shore.

Once Tyke has changed into his costume, the Ringmaster motions for him to get on the carpet as well. "If any of you want to get off and continue on foot, then I suggest you do it now. I am going to lend a hand to Centurian from above. My sight ma not be able to penetrate rock, but they still may be above ground." Once all are on or off of the carpet as they wish to be, he will begin to ascend and fly around the hills with Centurian looking for any signs that may show them where these bad guys may have gone.

Centurion takes to the air, flying over the reservoir and towards the hills, looking for anything suspicious. ORCA enters the reservoir itself, diving deep into the water, looking for anything that doesn't appear to belong. Ringmaster and Tyke also make an aerial pass over the area, trying to assist Centurion.

(OOC: Not sure what Spyder intended to do. If he wanted to ride along with Ringmaster, there was room on the cosmic carpet. Shade, I know you were planning on entering a mine to take a look around. Did you plan to hitch a ride with someone or teleport to the entrance of one or something else?)

It takes some time (fifteen minutes) but Centurion eventually finds an abandoned mine that appears "altered". When he gazes inside, he meets a sort of resistance to his penetrating vision. Some sort of barrier blocks his sight just 60 feet or so inside the entrance. A sign outside the mine indicates that it was called the Lightning Strike Mine. While passing over the area, Ringmaster notices Centurion studying one abandoned mine with apparent interest.

Meanwhile underwater, ORCA finds nothing that appears out of place in a reservoir.

The Ringmaster maneuvers the carpet along side of Centurion. "Find something interesting?"

“There’s something strange about this mine shaft.” Centurion responds. “There’s something blocking my vision. I think we should call the rest of the group in and check it out.” Centurion suggests.
