Maximum Enhancement for a Bane weapon?

And by the way, it's adamantine. Not adamantium. (Adamantium is from X-Men.)
Yeah, I know. The question was asked by one of my players, and he always writes adamantium, instead of adamantine. It's a pet peeve of mine.

And thanks for your insights.

Next Question: "So does a sundering weapon require higher hardness than its target? Or can a giant swinging a massive balsa-wood club destroy and adamantium blade just by virtue of his extra damage?"

As the rules are written, yep - that's doable.

You could, however, use the rules on smashing an object and apply them here, as well:

Ineffective Weapons: Certain weapons just can’t effectively deal damage to certain objects.

Follow-up question:

You have a +1 Dragon-bane longsword. Your 20th level cleric buddy casts Greater Magic weapon on your sword. Is your sword +7 (and thus Epic) vs. Dragons?
No.

Your +1 Dragon-bane longsword becomes a +3 against Dragons. The spell makes it +5 against everything. Enhancement bonuses do not stack. The only benefit you will get out of the sword is +2d6 damage vs Dragons.

I don't think the letter of the rules supports you here, but I do think the spirit does.

No. As Kmart Kommando says, the bonus from the spell is not cumulative with the bonus from the Bane quality. Your longsword is +5 vs normal foes and +5 vs dragons.

Kmart Kommando is in error.

When you check for the Bane property, you are either using a +1 sword or a +5 sword. Whichever it is, and however it got there, Bane then improves that bonus by +2.

I disagree. You're using a +1 sword or a +3 sword if the Bane power is active, both of which are then enhanced to +5.

Not quite.

You are using a sword with a +5 enhancement and the Bane Property...until someone casts a successful Dispel Magic. If the enhancement is +5, and if your weapon has the Bane property, then that weapon is effectively +7 versus some creatures.

If the Bane property on your sword is not active, what is its enhancement bonus?

If the Bane property is inactive, the bonus is +5; if the bane property is active, the bonus is still +5, because the bonuses are not cumulative.

Here's another example: take an ordinary weapon and cast GMW on it at 20th level. You get a +5 weapon. Take an ordinary +1 weapon and cast GMW as above. Still ends up +5, not +6.
