25th...

It seems we may lose some Virginianers for NCGD, should we try for the 18th?

I'll ask how many rounds can be had, while still having walking space. One of the nice things about the PG room is that it's right above the food court.

Aside from helping with date and venue, I also volunteer to help with (5) Map/Directions/Parking Instructions.

Xath,

No...most of the response, PMs and e-mails to me have voted for the 25th...so let's go with that. Game day design will be 2 slots - 1 morning slot - lunch break - 1 afternoon slot. Let's shoot for the Prince George's room. Here is what we need to get from the folks at U of M:

(1) How many tables can EN World get for each slot?

(2) How many seats at each table?

(3) What are the opening and closing times for the room?

(4) Can we arrive prior to opening time to set up?

(5) Is there an extra charge for early arrival and/or late departure?

All that said...let's definitely book the PG room for 9/25...

Thanks!

Paging Xath...

BUMP UP...;)!

Xath,

Drop us a line as soon as you hear something back from the U of M folks.

Anonymous donors have stepped forward to cover the rental cost of the Prince George's if the U of Mer's can't move funds. I will have spotty IP access today...but will check in as much as possible.

Thanks,

Hello Old One!

I would be interested in attending the GamesDay (if it is still 25 SEP, Saturday).

(1) I am willing to DM/GM. I would prefer to run "It Came from the Late, Late Show" -- a game that spoofs B-grade movies.

(2) I would prefer to DM/GM with no preference as to a time slot.

(3) I cannot help organize/schedule/coordinate the game day.

(4) I have no preference for the best location for such an event.

In service,

Dr. Games

Hackmaster

Hey --

If anyone would be willing to DM Hackmaster, I'll buy you lunch :D

I've been dying to try it, but I can't bring myself to buy the books for what might be a one-off session.

Dexterward,

1) Please stop using Lemonchiffon for your posts. It's impossible to read in stealth (or many other styles).

I said PM, not no pref.

Psion,

1) Sorry. It must be my ENWorld settings. When I post with the normal color font, It shows up as the same color as the back ground.

2). PM, noted.

Hello All,

So I signed up to GM for the gameday. This will be my first time being involved in an organized event like this and I was wondering if some of the other GM's could give some pointers about how they are oraginizing their sessions.

What I had in mind was to set up a web page that would detail:

1) My rules for my session. For example, one of the rules would be "no player killing". I used to GM at a Wizard's of the Coast store while an employee and player killing within the group was a big issue that led to unhappy players and the GM.

2) Description of the scenario with background and a map or two of the "player known environs".

3) Rules for rolling up characters. I want the players to make their characters in advance. Also, I would like the players to email me their characters so that I have a chance to review the characters and have copies in case anyone forgets their sheet.

4) And other things as I think of them or info becomes available. Like the table number (if a beast will exist) where my session will be.

I guess I could just post this stuff to the ENWorld message boards but I think I like the idea of a central web page better.

Anybody with experience in this have a feel for player numbers in the session, or should I set that myself (like a max of eight players), or will the organizers come up with a ruling?

Aside from this I also want to get some feedback about my choice to run a 3.0 as opposed to a 3.5 session. I haven't bought the rules for 3.5, therefore, I've never run a 3.5 game before. I DO have the 3.5 SRD and could possibly run 3.5 but that would be a bad idea, I think. I'd rather stick with something that I've run before and with which I feel comfortable.

So, anyone out there willing to participate in a 3.0 game?

I know I may be jumping the gun here because the venue still needs to be set in stone but I'm really excited about this. A chance to meet meet local players (sort of - if you're from Bawlmore let me know!) and famous ENWorlders would be great.

So in my experience there are two ways to run games in a convention or games day type environment. The first is to allow people to generate characters and have them come into your game; the second is to pre-generate characters and hand them out.

Personally, I come from a convention type background running games with pregen characters, so that’s what I can speak about. For my game (Starwars or D&D) I will be requesting a limit on the game size of 6. For a limit of 6, I will create 8 pre-generated characters, 6 as primary and 2 as backup characters. This allows for last minute adds to the table, with a max limit of 8 in the game.

For each Pregen, I will create a short back story, a list of “Beliefs and Rumors” that the character knows, a description of his/her relationship to the rest of the party, and a short list of any particular personal objectives that may not be common knowledge to the party. I will lay out the characters around the table with titles listing class/role. This allows the players who sign up to pick a character and provides a framework for them to build solid RP off of.

This method also allows me to keep the adventure somewhat focused so that some sort of conclusion (even a cliff hanger) can be reached in the time allotted. The trick is to create an adventure and a party that allows for enjoyable role-play without the players feeling railroaded. At the same time, the game tends to be more memorable and fun for the players (in my experience) if there is some sort of structure and they can accomplish some sort of goal and closure.

Hope this helps …..

Bill

Dexterward,

Put me down for D&D 3.5 OR Starwars D20.

I am still finalizing the StarWars adventure and am leaning more toward that. I have not yet made a decision and can always run the old reliable D&D if there is not much interest in StarWars.
