Melee classed small Raced characters?

How are the small races doing in 3.5 when it comes to melee?

I used to play a Halfling Fighter/Rogue with a 16 Str 16 Dex and did pretty well in melee.

What are your experiences with the new weapon size change in 3.5?

Im looking at if I should ask to have the old weapon sizes put in the game from 3.0.

Depends.

The halfling barbarian loves it because he can use a 1d10 damage greataxe. The halfling bard doesn't like it because his short bow does 1d4 damage now. Overall, however, its mostly the same.

We have a bbn1/clr5 gnome with strength 14 in our group (don't ask).

He used to wield a dwarven waraxe with the Exo weapon proficiency, now he got a spare feat.

His AC is pretty weak since he wants to keep the char mobile and his Dex is low, but compared with his good con and now and then a cure spell, he survives pretty well. Damage output: Lower than the lvl6 barbarian. But not much.

My halfling paladin suddenly gets reach with his lance (mounted on his half-celestial riding dog)!!

Of course, this means I now have to be careful not to get caught right next to a bad guy or I'll constantly have to do the ol' "take a 5' step back to attack" thing until I run out of space.

The only problem I see (exept for reach, see my other post) is for the handling of treasure. The lower damage isn't a problem, as in small greatswords kick ass.

But small greatswords are so rare... pray for the return of King Kobold!

Or King Gobo. Or the halfling cannibals in my games. Or the weird gnomes tricksters sabotaging your army. Or...

I like to have humanoid games. :D

Divine Might: It's one of the channeling feats from Defender of the Faith. You can activate it with a standard action (by the book, the FAQ says free action... wrongly) and gain your charisma modifier X as bonus to weapon damage for X rounds.

Charisma 18 or higher and it's better than rage, especially for the rare high dex paladin (with Dex high enough for TWF).

We have a Kobold Rogue in our group. We started the campaign under 3.0 & converted after 3.5 came out. As a result, the difference in damage output is very noticable to him. It hasn't helped that we've been facing a lot of things immune to sneak attacks. Admittedly he has a 10 Str so he gets no bonus damage.

I think that with the changes to small characters they're a great deal less viable in melee unless designed exclusively for it.
