MM Stat Adjustments

What's the formula for working out what a creature's stat adjustments are based on their stats in the MM? (i.e. Halflings have -2 Str, +2 Dex) I can't seem to remember.

Subtract 10 from their stats, or 11 if the stat is odd.

Note that some monsters have rearranged their 15 point buy to specialize in certain area, but it calls this fact out in the description.

This gets a bit more complicated.......the necropolitian stats in libris mortis has more stats than normal, and this formalue doesnt work. It doesnt specifically say they are using anything other than 10/11 for stats, the only clue is "starting ability scores remain the same".

That's because Necropolitan is a template, not a base creature.

Here's the basic process I use:

1. Check to see if monster has a "Monster as characters" section, which will specify what the stat adjustments are.

2. If there isn't one of those, subtract 10 from the ability score if it's even and 11 if it is odd to get the ability score modifier (note that this can produce negative numbers).

Voila!

If it's a template, follow the template instructions, don't do step 2 above.
