Monstrous Humanoid = Humanoid?

I know they are written up as two different types.

My question specifically is this: Does a Monstrous Humanoid count as Humanoid for the purpose of spells that say they affect Humanoids?

Or are they completely different and therefore not what such spells refer to, and it is coincidental that the word "Humanoid" exists in the description of "Monstrous Humanoid"?

You mean spells like Hold Person?

The reason red flag warnings will go up at this question will be because of spells like Alter Self.

As far as I know, when it says "Humanoid", that's what it means. "Monstrous Humanoid" is something else, and the similarity in descriptions is coincidental.

I separate them. Monstrous Humanoids is listed as a type, with their own type qualities, which is enough for me. The fluff/RAI suggests they're physiologically different enough to merit a difference.

I think the only reason the Monstrous Humanoid type exists in the first place is to not have these creatures be affected by spells that target humanoids.

For spells like hold person I think it is their body which matters, so hold person is more likely to work than hold monster, but for spells like alter-self, I look towards the much stricter polymorph rules.

I am 100% sure that monstrous humanoid do not count as humanoids for any purpose.
If there are effects that depend on body shape, it will say bipedal. But for game rules, monstrous humanoids are not humanoids.

As everyone has said, RAW they are different.

This is one that, in my experience, can be hand-waived as long as your players are not rules-abusive by nature.
