More on martial arts in d20 Modern

So, are there any special mechanical benfits from or restrictions against the combination of two wildly different styles? (I practice Aikido and Tae kwon Do and get some of the strangest looks when I tell people their are fundamental similarities...)

I get the same response about my combination of capoeira and sumo.

There are no "special" restrictions :)

Capoeira attacks are modified by Dexterity, whereas Sumo attacks are modified by Strength, so in all likelihood you would be better at one than the other.

Aikido attacks are modified by Wisdom, so again, you can see that a character who was excellent at Aikido would not be nearly as good at Capoeira, unless he was an individual blessed with high ability scores.

Taking different styles does allow access to a wider range of maneuvers, which is its own reward in many ways.

Also, complimentary styles (two styles that grant proficiency in kicking for example) grant a one time competence bonus of +1 to hit.

So there are all sorts of benefits for cross training.

I tried to make the system balanced and fun first, realistic second, but within the suspension of disbelief range :)

Nice :)

Bit of a mini-update- the game is at the editor's, and the interior art is coming along nicely.

Looks like the game will be on time :)

And I'm rounding up the players for a one-shot.

Hell, I might just run "Enter the Dragon."

In a humorous side-note, I'm starting an "Enter the Dragon" one-shot as well, only I'm just using the feats in the book. Maybe later we can compare notes and see how both styles worked.
