is that correct? that's more than 10% of the population begging! you couldn't take a walk without bumping into at least ten of them! ;)

Sounds like New York City in the late '80s/early '90s.

I believe that how the old the city is hasn't been pinned down yet. It's a good question we haven't discussed yet.

Krug? Buttercup? Lalato? Wiz-o-plains? Grey Dwarf?

Any suggestions?

I think we should be vague about that at this point. Let's say...fairly old.

My main summary on the initial Time to open up shop thread (now on page 5) does list a Thieves Guild as one of the many power groups in the city. However, there hasn't been too much of a discussion about that guild (or a lot of the other ones).

I think we either need a Minister of Guilds to work in conjuction with Buttercup (since Guild structure is so important to a city) or create a new thread on discussing guilds in particular.

Here's a list of the Power Group guilds listed in my summary:

Glittering Brotherhood - Gemcutters
Guild of Guards
Mages Guild
Merchants Guild
Potters Guild
Thieves Guild
Workers' Senate - sort of a common labors guild

Of course, there will be more than these, it's just that these are the most powerful in the city.

Other possible powerful guilds: Glazers Guild (suggested by someone), Silk Fish Farmers Guild (needs a better name).

I think a minister of guilds might be a good idea. I think I have enough on my plate now, so it would be great to work with someone.

And since the thieves guild has come up, I've got an idea for an NPC, but she's tied in with a tavern I'm working on. Essentially, she's a bard (I was thinking level 3 or 4) who is a famous torch singer. She's hot, hot, hot, and whenever she sings at this particular tavern, it's packed to the walls with salivating guys. She goes home with a likely looking (and drunk) guy, casts sleep on him, scopes his place out thorougly and leaves him a note thanking him for a wonderful evening which he, of course, is too embarrassed to admit he can't remember. She reports what she saw in the mark's house to someone fairly high in the thieves' guild, and they take it from there.

Anyway. I'd like a bit more detail on the thieve's guild before I actually submit this little charmer, and I'm also still thinking about the tavern.

Oh, and the guild of silk fishers could be called FOWF Fraternal Order of Watersilk Farmers. Or not. And maybe we should have a guild of performers & courtesans. The Order of Pleasant Passtimes, perhaps. No doubt they would be in bed (so to speak) with the thieves' guild.

Silkers Guild or
Silkers Circle or
Silkers Clan

Let me know what you think...

Silkers Circle... that's the winner in my book. Sam, you're a great idea man. Keep 'em coming.

p.s. I'm going to add the Silkers Circle to the power groups list, as well as the Glazers Guild. Unless, of course, any of the ministers have a strong objection?

Some guilds might require a minister unto themselves... Thieves Guild and Mage's Guild always play heavy rolls in games, and something like the Thieves Guild would be a huge undertaking onto itself, there would be literally hundreds of different types of people alone (fenses, beggars, cutpurses, loan sharks, gambiong establishments....)

I agree. The Thieves Guild and Mages Guild should have their own Ministers eventually but it might be too soon to break the guilds down that far.

There should be a head Guild Minister that takes submissions for guild design and layout. Once all the major guilds have been decided on then a guild specific Minister should be appointed to head its development.

Wippit, you interested in becoming the Guild Minister? Conaill, have you taken a Ministership yet? (I can't remember.)

I've nearly finished stat'ing the creature the silk comes from (the Watersilk Jelly)...

so what about something like:
the Watersilker's Circle...
the Watersilker's League...
the Watersilker's Guild/Clan...
the Watersilker's Co-operative...

just a slight twist on Sam's excellent concept...

To me the problem with that is that it will cause a schism between Watersilk Jelly silk and other types of silk. A silkers guild will want to control all the silk trade coming through Mor's End. That would mean dealing with buying and selling silk from other regions.

Sure jellyfish silk is what Mor's End is famous for but coin is coin. (Note that I think Ruavel has come up with a great name to be the official name of the Mor's End silk - watersilk.)

fair enough... I can see where you're coming from there...

and as much as I'd love to take the credit for coming up with the name watersilk, I think I read it in another thread... I have a feeling the credit may belong to Buttercup...

I'm just a lowly lacky around here, trying to contribute in any way I can...

New Trade item Idea!

Wow, I just thought of this while making myself a sandwich.

Imagine if you will a type of cucumber that when pickled, makes the sweetest tasting pickle you've ever had (the cucumber by itself isn't bad either).

And imagine if that cucumber ONLY grows in the swamp near Mor's End and when the cucumber is grown somewhere else it just doesn't taste the same.

Now imagine being the farmer having to cultivate the cucumber in a swamp where catoblepas and darktentacles live. You're going to need some PC class levels just to survive (especially ranger) - but the profit, oh the profit. Almost as good as the watersilk trade. (Sometimes better depending on who you're selling to. The sand barbarians love the cucumber and pay huge amounts for them.)

What does everyone think?
