Mythusmage's Tedious Hospital Stay

You've recovered. You wouldn't be here if you hadn't recovered. As for death; not so much a recovery as being sent back. But that's getting into theology. Which is first cousin to religion and a place the PTBs at ENW may not want us to go to. :darn: :)

Glad to see you back Sir...

I'm ecstatic to hear you're recovering so well. Work the physio - it pays off.

I'm finding it a bit wierd how many people on this board have suffered strokes or stroke-like events...

Hey, I joke about my experience, but a stroke can be damn serious. A stroke can kill. So if you think you or a friend are having a stroke, treat it wery seriously and get help right then and there. You can recover from embarrassment, you can't recover from death.

Too true...

I agree completely. Folks: if you think you are maybe having a stroke, get help immediately - do NOT 'wait and see'.

To this I would add: All you aging (ie, you're not 18 anymore) folks get your blood pressure checked regularly - it can sneak up on you (and it does beaucoup Sneak Attack Damage)...

My stroke - not ischemic, but a rather massive hemmorage - caught me 6 years ago this month. (I was only 30 and in decent shape, but had severe un-diagnosed/treated congenital hypertension). Felt precisely like the sudden but mild headache you get if your glasses aren't seated 100% correctly. Then I noticed that my left arm and leg weren't working right, so I called 911 and was unconscious (and bleeding out into my brain) within MINUTES. I was home alone too, so: No Call? No Live.

Considering the initial prognosis ("call the family, he's toast") my recovery was excellent...

The bleeding cost me about a golf-ball sized chunk of basal ganglia: initially, total paralysis of the left side, plus refinements. After a few months in hospital and a year or so of Physio (I LOVE all physical therapists), all the parts more or less work. I lack sensation and fine motor control on the left side, so I walk with a cane (I could do without it mostly, but it's cool), type one-handed, and can no longer play the guitar or safely practice martial arts.

I'm NOT complaining - I got off really, really LUCKY. It's not death that really concerns me (and I've been close enough to know), but the brain is chock full of REALLY important stuff that I would have REALLY missed. Yes, losing the guitar sucked, but I'm still ME - some of the people I was in rehab with aren't anymore...

Glad you're doing well. Always good to hear the 'I survived and am doing fairly well' stories.

Yes, I take my HBP medicine every day. I was lucky, I knew to look out for it early. Both parents have/had HBP and one grandparent died of a stroke. I got my BP checked regularly and, in my late thirties, it started elevating, so I saw the doctor and have been medicated ever since.
