New FR DM Screen impressions

I'm hoping someone's picked up the new FR DM screen and can tell us about it. I was not a fan of the original 3e DM screen -- I thought their choice of tables wasn't very helpful, and I wasn't crazy about the layout or the stock they printed it on. Can some kind soul tell us what's new/different about the new screen?

Here is a capsule review I found on Realms-L...
I think I'll pick this one up.

Well I picked up them up and so far I'm impressed. I'll give you a run down
of the screen real quick.

First of all the outside cover art is gorgeous. It is done in the same style
as Magic of Faerun and is nothing short of breathtaking.

The first panel is of Drizzt and Guenwhyvar standing in front of what must be the Spine of the Word and looking at what appears to be a Portal.

The next two panels are one big scene of a Beholder Mage with its undead
allies taking on a formidable looking group of adventurers. The Beholder
Mage looks spectacular. He is shooting some really neat looking magic out of
his stalks... much to the detriment of the party I mentioned above. There
also appears to be a Drow City in the background.

The next panel looks like it *might* be Artemis Entreri holding Charon's
Claw to some poor man's throat. He is also standing in front of a shimmering
portal.

The interior sports the same parchment look that all the FRCS, Magic of Faerun, and Lords of Darkness have had. It works well, but I do like alternating background colors in my tables... it just makes them easier to read. For the most part the screen is the same. I'll list the contents by panel.

Panel 1:
Weapons Charts. These include items from the FRCS as well. Very useful, IMO.

Panel 2:
Fundamental Actions in Combat, Attack Roll Modifiers, Partial Actions,
Cover, and Concealment.

Panel 3:
Misc. Actions , Armor, and the Rolls of Years from 1360 - 1380.

Panel 4:
Size and AC of Objects, Terrain and Overland Movement (Realms Chart from the FRCS), Substance Hardness and Hit Points, Common Weapon and Shield Hardness and Hit Points, Turning Undead, The Calendar of Harptos (including Common Names and Annual Holidays), DCs to Break or Burst Items, Object Hardness and
Hitpoints, Light Sources.

The Encounter Booklet inside looks to be really useful for generating
overland encounters.

There are charts for Dungeon Levels 1-20. I don't ever populate dungeons
this way... but I guess some people might find it useful.

Cool, this is exactly what I was looking for! For my FR campaign it sounds perfect, a vast improvement over the original 3e screen. For others there's probably a few wasted bits, as non-FR campaigns don't need the Roll of Years or Calendar of Harptos. (In fact *I* probably don't need those on my screen, since I rarely access that info, for which the book is fine. Ah, well.)

I saw it in the store today and thought "20 bucks for a DM screen!" Though it sounds to be a lot better then the first 3E screen, I don't know if I'm willing to fork over that much for a screen... Call me a cheap bastard I guess.

That said, I'll probably pick it up anyway, as I pick up everything that comes out it seems...

I looked at them today in the store. They are in my opinion inferior to the normal DM screens.

Panel #1 removes all of the DC check stuff and replaces it with a weapon chart straight out of the PHB.

The bottom half of one of the other pages is wasted with a complete armor chart.

Then they go and add a small section listing the current years of FR and then a small breakdown of the calender. Neither of them are important enough to require being on the screen.

The only good addition was a overland movement chart broken down by terrain type.

Maybe the encounter charts make it worth it but I decided to get the standard screen before they are all gone.

$20.00 seems a little steep. :(

i often wonder how something softcovered and as thin as magic of faerun and lords of darkness warrants a near thirty dollar cover price.

alas i will buy it as i need a 3e dm screen and this one sounds to have have all of the things i want on it.
