No one has ever, ever gotten defensive or offended by "feeblemind."
Whether or not that's true, it's reasonable to anticipate possible future issues with your extremely merchandised big-money corporate product and find ways to avoid walking into future problems, rather to just go "Well, no-one complained yet, must be fine forever!". Especially as WotC has walked into a bunch of highly avoidable problems on this front (c.f. the incredibly obvious mistakes with the Hadozee), so them trying to avoid any similar issues even though "no-one complained" is probably smart.

If you want people to be precious about TRADITION!, D&D isn't the place to find them, nor is anything corporate-owned or big-money. I'm sure there are smaller games out there which are as they were 30+ years ago, at least language-wise, or I guess just play earlier editions.

I think they also wanted to ditch the spell though, or they'd have renamed it to like "Mindbreak", rather than replacing it.

Yes... that's the point. One of the "this is the same edition!" was that it was going to be backward compatible with adventures and monster books. When they failed on actual compatibility where you can mix-and-match everything, and even limited what "backward compatibility" would mean not following the standard definition.
I'd like to assume that this will be covered when the new Monster Manual comes out, but if you want to stress about it until then, I won't stop you.

I am surprised they let that slip through because WOTC's sensitivity readers are basically equating people cognitive disabilities to those with substance abuse. Noted,
