New Star Trek RPG

Dark Psion

First Post
For those waiting for Decipher to release the new Star Trek RPG, it will be released in 12 days, the release date was cloaked up to now I guess.

Here is the link: http://www.decipher.com/startrek/rpg/index.html

The designers are most of the guys from Last Unicorn Games who made the last Star Trek RPG, but when LUG was bought by WoC, Paramount pulled the liscense because they didn't want Star Trek and Star Wars at the same company. Paramount gave the liscense to Decipher, who makes the Star Trek CCG and WoC, no longer having a product, released all of the designers who were promptly hired by Decipher.

If the Star Trek:Nemesis has a plot half as good it will be the best Sci-Fi movie ever.

Actually they did not released them because they lost the the Star Trek license. They release them because they did not want to more up north. Wizards wants to shut down the LA office to save more cost. They asked each of them if they want to move into Seattle headquarter. A bulk of them opted not to. Wizard then gave them a generous severence package.

Of course, Decipher wasn't prompt. But they did the right thing by hiring them about a month later after the layoff to establish their RPG Studio.

Had the former LUG moved to Seattle, it is likely they would have been assigned to the Star Wars RPG project ... and possibly d20 Modern, while the TSR designers are free to work on any fantasy genre project.

Or just layed off and shown the door by now.

IIRC, Decipher's current license to publish ST RPG will last until 2006. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Personally, I hope Decipher's RPG Studio will develop an RPG brand of their own or acquire an IP, like Wizards acquired D&D. I don't invest too much stock on licensed products.

I'm actually thinking of buying this one. I dunno why, I've never been the least interested in Star Trek RPGing, but there's something about it that sparked my interest.

I've been cruising their Coda (the new system) boards and in D20 terms, your starship can get feats. The Enterprise D has both Famous and Flagship advantages and Voyager may be the Psychic Warrior's choice in starships. It apears they have steamlined the starship rules a little as well. That's probably better, the old Icon rules could take up several pages with stats.

Here are their boards: http://216.40.212.6/forum/index.php?s=

does anyone yearn for the old FASA star trek game?

that starship combat system was elegently simple. the only thing wrong with it was that you needed about 100 square yards of space to do it in!

i still have those chips floating around...

Our starship combat system is Engage! the Minis game I've been working on for a while now. It's nice to have a Trek Miniature wargame that's not limited to the original series.

The rules in the RPG (found in the Narrator's guide) are non-spatial. You don't move minis around on a battle mat. You give orders and make skills checks on the bridge. It was really the only chunk of the RPG I 'designed' (as opposed to commenting on or fixing ;) ) and so far it's been well received, although it could be 20 pages longer. I suspect the system will explode with add-ons once people start playing it.
