New Star Trek RPG

that starship combat system was elegently simple. the only thing wrong with it was that you needed about 100 square yards of space to do it in!

Ehhh... not my cup of Earl Gray tea, hot.

My peeve on the FASA Starship Combat Simulator is the Three-Phases-Per-Turn sequence. Why not make it simple and use one movement and one action per turn?

But considering that if given the option of using the above game and Star Fleet Battles, role-players would prefer FASA's version.

The new, non-spatial, extremely-crunchy, rules are shorter.
"Non-spatial"???

The first thing that came to mind is "relative abstraction" ... from the flawed Star Wars starship combat rules. I hope you are not using that concept.

But if you do, I certainly hope it is WAY better than the aforementioned rule.

You'd be *astonished* at how much cooler Trek is when all it's people and events and tech are divorced from the bad dialog and plots that surrounded some of them.
Or from bad show's executive producer. :p

BTW, good luck to you and the former LUG staff when you tackle ENTERPRISE show-to-RPG project ... headfirst.

Wisdom=Perception. It serves the same purpose in both games. Favored classes...er, professions for different races, or species. Prestige professions. Come on! Coda also has saving throws, something D&D created. While I'm sure there was no intention of making the system just like d20, it looks pretty obvious that a lot of notes were taken from the D&D PHB.

Look, I'm not arguing that CODA has a lot in common with d20, but it has a lot in common with *lots of RPGs.* And once you start talking about saves being invented by D&D we're getting into the absurd. D&D *invented* roleplaying! Classes, levels, experience. Decipher made no attempt to throw out everything that had been done by every other RPG ever and create an entirelt new method of gaming.

Well, d20 "influenced" or not I am myself more interested in the game, especially after seeing the sample page layouts. Cool!

I agree with Matt's argument...most sucessful RPG designs these days are going to look somewhat alike, if for no other reason than to capitalize on the "ease of familiarity" factor. (not necessarily Matt's argument, just my opinion) Otherwise, you run the risk of alienating players for mechanics reasons...the Storyteller system is a good example. Many players love it, but many do not, as it is a radically different system than most games out there. It takes some adjustments to get used to the new system.

...but enough of that. Matt: tell me more about Engage! I'm eager for details...

I loved the old FASA game. They handled the setting much better than any of the games i've seen since. THe sourcebooks were top notch and reading the timelines would give TONS of adventure ideas. The only thing that sucked were the pre written modules.

Im in Matt's Boat as well.

I loved FASA's setting too because it was so focused on the movie era, which tends to be avoided everywhere else in Trekdom.

IRanger REG, you explained my Star Trek Stance perfectly. From Voyager on, Trek has been incredibly disappointing.

And as for the Trek RPG, I have it preordered.

As for the relative ship combat, this was discussed heavily on the TrekRPGNet boards, and it sounded really really fun.

UNLIKE the Star Wars system.

And as for Mr. Colvilles comment on why be roleplying from your characters perspective the whole time and then gather arounda board and do things tactically.... that is EXACTLY why we don't use minatures in D20. There was another thread about this earlier. I wish I could have put it that succinctly.

And...

Thank for visiting Matt!

One of the reasons I'm reluctant to get into a new Star Trek RPG is mostly because of how quickly LUG and its version sank into oblivion. I'd already bought some of the books, and I also own a ton of the old Fasa stuff too. A whole new version this soon is too much for me. I don't dispute that it may well be a great game; I just can't afford to keep buying new games for old licenses every year or two. Same goes for Star Wars d20. Anew version every 5-10 years is about my limit.

Hey, I've watched Star Trek in one form or another since I was a kid in the 70s; Enterprise is the first trek show in a long time that has me watching every week. The last few years of Next Gen, most of the run for DS9, and all of Voyager just didn't interest me. I'd occasionally watch, but mostly I was bored by it. DS9's big war, including some spectacular space battles (I love watching spaceships blow each other up), were about the only thing that got me interested until Enterprise. Enterprise feels more like the orignal show to me, which is a huge plus in its favor.
