New Star Trek RPG

Did you like products written by the LUG staff?

If so, would you be open enough to check out their new Star Trek products, published under the Decipher label?

They were OK. "OK" isn't enough to make me want to buy a whole new set of $35-$40 books. I just wasn't that impressed with LUG's stuff. That's unfortunate.

I'm rather surprised the ST license has had such trouble. I actually played one Fasa ST campaign and it was amusing even if the system was only so so. I loved having a chance to play a Klingon:)

I'dbeen really looking forward to Enterprise, so I'm a little disappointed the series lost me so quickly. Reminds me of Voyager...alot of potential, but....

Here's hoping the new ST game does well.

I too am wondering just how easy it would be to use the CODA engine for a non-ST game. Even though all the playtesters love the new T20, It just seems like 2d6 says Traveller all over it. :D

Well, in June of this year (barring any delay) you should be able to use Coda in the new Lord of the Rings RPG.

Steve Long was able to complete the draft core rules of this epic fantasy game before he left Decipher at the end of last year to head Hero Games.

Gah!

Class-based system? I was hoping they wouldn't resort to that... }:(

Kannik

Well, resort is maybe the wrong word...

Of course, the system isn't the most important part, I know -- our LUGTREK campaign was the most amazing time I've ever had RPing due to one of the BEST GMs of all time, I swear -- but when the system enters the picture when it must, it can help kaibosh the suspension of disbelief.

Not that I'm fully judging the system before I see it, but as much as I enjoy playing DnD and like the 3e rules, there are things (like classes) that drive me nuts.

Well, I'll see when it comes out. }:)

First, a couple more sneak peaks at the new book

http://216.40.212.6/trek/index2.htm

Second, as to ColonelHardisson not being impressed with LUG trek, you obviouly have never played it with MicroMachine starships.(All I need is the 1701-A to complete my set)

Third, I don't really look at this as a new game, more like a 2nd edition version of LUG trek.

Fourth, as to Enterprise, check the weapon list in one of those sneak peaks above and you will see laser pistols for the timeframe of Enterprise. Personally I watch Enterprise with the same mindset I have watching the different Tenchi Myuo sagas. Same characters and setting, but different story.

I really wanted to like LUG's Trek RPG, honestly. I thought they produced beautiful books.

It could be that Trek itself doesn't appeal to me as a concept for an RPG. Maybe it's not the game. I'd have to think about it some more.

So, now that it is out, has anyone gotten it? The folks at Trek-rpg.net all seem to really like it.

IMO, this system, from what I have seen on the forums and webpages (don't have the book yet) would be perfect for Traveller.

Ok, I snagged it last night and have skimmed through much of it.

First, Coda vs. d20 arguments are silly, IMO. There are elements of d20 found in Coda (and those elements are also found in games which predate d20) so people running around screaming that Coda is a d20 rip off have missed the boat, I think.

Having said that, I think Coda would be pretty inspirational for someone looking to develop a levelless d20 system, or someone looking for a more gradual advancement of characters rather than the "sudden" change inherint in levels.

The production value of the book is superb, filled with many excellent photos and graphics abounding.

I like the Coda system far more than I liked the LUG Icon rules - they seem much more intuitive and streamlined.

I will post a more detailed opinion later in the week after I've read more of it - or free to ICQ or email me if there is something specific you're wondering.
