No Sallah in Indiana Jones IV?

Well, crap on a stick. :(

My hopes for this movie have just plummeted a good couple of notches. Not merely for the lack of the series' best character beyond Indy himself, but also for the (rumored, admittedly) reason given in the linked article, that the studio/produces want an overall younger cast.

I really want this movie to be worthy of the series, but I'm having real doubts...

Rhys-Davies got into some trouble (or at least got a bunch of negative publicity, complaints from muslim organisations, etc.) a couple years back for making some decidedly non-PC comments on the Western culture vs. Islam issue... I wouldn't be surprised if the makers of the movie were reluctant to cast him as a (presumably) muslim character after that.

Or maybe they're planning to set the movie in some distant corner of the globe, and having Sallah around would simply make no sense.

But... but... Sallah plays a key role in several iconic Indy scenes. An Indy movie without Sallah would be like... like... an Indy movie without the fedora and the bullwhip.

Bah.

Well, do keep in mind he wasn't in the second movie, and it still turned out to be a good movie. So Sallah doesn't HAVE to be there. But I am sorry to hear it. I still think that making a 4th Indy movie is going to be a mistake in the long run, though I'd love to be proven wrong.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. The only character who needs to be in an Indiana Jones movie is Indiana Jones. It would be nice if Sallah or even Marion Ravenwood made an appearance (of all of Indy's women, I liked her the best) but if not that's ok. No, the thing that haas me concerned is that kid from Even Stevens being cast in the movie. That kid, Shia Labouf (Holes, I, Robot, and the upcoming Transformers movie) is as annoying as hell.

Temple of Doom *is* a good movie. It has mine cart rollercoaster, Obi-Wan Lounge, and a nod to Harrison Ford's "scare the stormtroopers" scene in ANH.

Agreed. Even though Raiders in my favorite of the three movies, Last Crusade is my LEAST favorite by a looooooooong stretch. Temple of Doom is just so much fun, especially that mine cart chase and everything that leads up to it. I mean the last 20min of that movie is just one superextended action sequence. Freeing Indy, to rescuing Willie Scott, to fighting thier way out of the mining area, to finally making to the mine cart chase, to the fleeing to the bridge, to the confrontation on the bridge, it's pretty much non stop action.

And it's GLORIOUS.
