Rules - Nyaricus's Tasty Bits (a thread about threads)
Hello all, this is a thread which i will be using to interconnect all those interesting posts that I have started up and contributed to (or, perhaps, simply find interesting), by catergory, and then putting a link in for easy access in my Sig. Feel free to comment on those specific posts, in those threads where they originate, but I'd appreciate keeping this one relatively clean of errata. Happy gaming to you all!!

A Nerds' Life
All advice and criticism will be gratefully received, all flames will be negligently extinguished, and all trolls will be ignominously starved. Thanks for your opinions.
>Imret
I know I'm arguing hard for my original positions, and you're arguing the argument, but that's what arguments are SUPPOSED to be. Strongly held intellectual positions that come to some sort of compromise or understanding.

On Adding 3rd Party Materials into a game
If a player wants to add something, the conversation goes something like this: "No. Loan me the book and the answer becomes Maybe. If I think the feature you want is underpowered, the answer will likely become Yes."

Now for paladin players, here's a safe analogy to use as a rule of thumb:
1) If you're clearly more powerful than your enemy, ask yourself, "What would Superman do?"
2) If you're NOT clearly more powerful than your enemy, go with, "What would Batman do?"
>Wulf
We had a 2e game with one "human" female wizard and seven dwarven characters. The weird thing was, we really didn't even plan it that way. The first 4 or 5 of us had our characters in mind and the others said, "heck, we've almost got seven dwarves as it is..." With the obvious paralells, we all came up with nicknames for the dwarves. Sneaky (rogue), Creepy (psionicist), Shooty (fighter specialized in crossbows), Smashy (cleric/fighter hammer wielder), Slashy (fighter specialized in axes), Noisy (bard), and Ma (cleric). All together, we had a great time in that game.
>Greatwyrm
Adventuring companies regularly emerge from their holes carrying more gold and silver coins than were ever created in our world's history. My question - who put all those coins in that hole?
A: Monsters have treasure.
Q: Where did the monster get its treasure?
A: From looting villages and killing adventurers.
Q: a village's loot is chickens, pigs, and grain. If... ah, forget it.
>Sorloc (from RPGHost)

Finally, I love templates! So PCs expect to see half-dragon trolls (type: Dragon), half-fiend bugbears (type: Outsider(Evil)), shadow tigers (type: Magical Beast), half-fiend shadow mineral spellstiched ancient dracoliches (type: TPK), etc.
>Nifft
page 126 of the Shining South Sourcebook describes a band of savage dire gnomish were-moles called the Blood Screamers. They are lead by a gnome Vampire called, simply, Blood-Curdling Scream - a CE male Rock Gnome Vampire Illusionist 9 [I assume they erronessly left out the were-mole template]. Anyways, what do we have here? A bunch of really scary furballs that would look great as trim on a fancy coat - but they could have an awesome hook, seeing as how they also live in tunnels dug out by giant ants, and they live close to the magic-rich nation of Halruaa, and the fact that gnomes like magic and they live in an area called the bandit wastes which means they might want to raid parts of Halruaa for magic items which Blood-Curdling Scream could use to further his evil plots to take over all of Faerun and kill Elminster and bring him back as a bloodcraving fur hat and Drizzt as matching mittens
>Nyaricus (that's me )
My Kill List:
Drummers: 12 (pretty easy, though one was a high-level bard)
Pipers: 11 (pretty hard... deadly sonic attacks!)
Lords: 10 (a big battle, they had very high jump modifiers too)
Ladies: 9 (nearly wiped out the whole party; they were shadowdancers)
Maids: 8 (we thought it would be easy but they were Battlemaid PrC with dire cattle)
Swans: 7 (no sweat)
Geese: 6 (we hardly got any xp for this but did have fun terrorizing a farm)
Golden rings: 5 (evil entities in the form of gold jewelry)
Birds: 4 (they weren't just any birds but calling birds that summoned fiends)
French hens: 3 (almost TPK!)
Turtle doves: 2 (actually they were dire koopas).
Partridge: 1 (it was no challenge...the treant it was roosting in was another matter)

-Wizards' Rules-
Wizard's First Rule - People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true.
Wizard's Second Rule - The greatest harm can result from the best intentions.
Wizard's Third Rule - Passion rules reason.
Wizard's Fourth Rule - There is magic in forgiveness- the magic to heal! In the forgiveness you grant, and more so in the forgiveness you receive.
Wizard's Fifth Rule - Mind what people do, not only what they say, for deeds will betray a lie.
Wizard's Sixth Rule - The only sovereign I can allow to rule me is reason. The first law of reason is this: what exists, exists; what is, is. From this irreducible, bedrock principle, all knowledge is built. This is the foundation from which life is embraced.
Wizard's Seventh Rule - Life is the future, not the past.
Wizard's Eighth Rule - Deserve victory.
Wizard's Ninth Rule - A contradiction cannot exist in reality.

naw man, i am leaving room to build this up. I am still basically a noob here at EN World, but i have quite a few entries and points of interests i will eventually post up.
The main thing is, is that i needed to put in at least 3 letters for each post - so the title is down there instead of the title line untill i can get some links posted . . . and boy (!) do i have many. Patience is the key here, but i'll start to build this up as time goes by.
Remember that since i am only "editing" the entries, this post will not go to the top of the forum page; so if people want to check this out, it'll always be in my sig, or even better, just bookmark it! Hope that answers your (an others) questions and potential questions.
cheers

Ah, okay. For a moment I thought I was going to be treated to a 'best of' symposium where we went over all the times we argued.
No. Seriously. I had no idea what the plan was here. But I'm down for a point of reference. 'Tasty Bits' is a pretty questionable thread title, though.

huh, i wasn't thinking i was being elusive at all . . . actually, sorta clever

. My sig explains it better though > and since i wasn't expecting to get even this much traffic in this thread (rather, just continually editing posts) i figured that my sig would be the main draw into this thread. Alas, that has been proven otherwise, what with you meddling kids!!! (jk, jk)
Anyways, i hope that once i get some more info in here, you peeps can find some cool topics.

well, actually I don't understand any of it really. He seems to get spells known...thwen get a feat, that gives him a WHOLE bunch more spells know. Then he seems to cast vitually none per day....I am probably reading this wrong.
So, was there a thread that explained a bit more of it? Or anything to that nature?
Once again sorry to intrude into your thread here. I'll get rid of this post once I understand the sorcerer.
Thanks
-Sravoff

hey man, don't worry about spamming this post at all - i made all the basic areas which i can edit things into already. I am completely cool with you guys posting in here, if there's something you simply don't understand.
In the sorcerer, you might not have noticed a link in the upper right corner whihch leads you back to the main thread. I didn't notice anyhting out of whack with spells per day/known, etc, but i don't like to play spellcasters in general, so i mihgt not have noticed that. Basically, getting bonus feats like a wizard, and Eschew Materials were the main points i wanted to leach from that sorc - they make them a more viable base class, otherwise they end up going PrC ASAP - and making the sorcerer base class a "few level dip" class for prereqs.
What i will also be implimenting is that wizards must choose item creation feats or spell mastery - making them "scholar types" and with the sorc doing meta-magic, they are the balsters. It makes sense in my mind, so i am going with it.
Hope that helps man.

I took a look back to the thread, but the class didn't seem to be discussed, atleast not on any of the points I didn't understrand. I'll look back over it.
I never even considered the sorcerer a weak class, they ahve always been one of my favorites, but that is perhaps because we never bother with components, unlless they are really expensive.
Sorcerer Barbarians were always favorites of mine, but I guess that is all preference ,as I have seen a lot of people trying to "fix" the sorcerer.
I'll look back over the sorcerer and edit if I find, or fail to, anything out.
Thanks again for the thread, Sravoff
-edit- Ok, I understand the spells now, mostly, though the spells known is still a bit confusing. Can the sorcerer only learn spells on his spell list, by way of the spell schooling feat? Or is spells known learned from any list?
That bit is still slightly confusing, though for ow, I shall guess you have to use the spell schooling feat to learn any spells.... though that seems slightly silly, to require a class to take certain feats. -/edit-

hey man,
i think that sorc class was just a "here, check out something that's cool" spur of the moment thing - my best advice would be to post on the thread adn ask for some details about the class and how, mechanically, it works.
and no problem with the thread

Hi, Nyaricus! Hi, Sravoff! I was the poster of the tweaked sorcerer, so I'd like to explain a bit here.
The basic idea behind my sorcerer tweak is that sorcerers learn spells piecemeal. They have no system or plan, and might not even be able to understand arcane writing (ie. scrolls). They just know how to focus their will 'this way' and create a fireball-type effect. They do not know 'why', just that it works.
Mechanically, the sorcerer can learn any spell in existance, but always as an arcane spell (so ASF always applies). They can even make up entirely new 'spells' that emulate creatures' spell-like abilities. If a sorcerer wants to learn 'cure light wound', he can do so. If he wants to learn 'holy sword', he can do so as well.
However, a sorcerer has no 'spell list' except for the spells he knows. So, if a 1st level sorcerer chose to learn 'cure light wounds' and 'sleep' as his two 1st level spells, then he CANNOT activate a wand of magic missile, as magic missile is not on his spell list. He COULD, however, activate wand of cure light wounds
Now if that same sorcerer took the Spell Schooling feat for Wizard spells once at 1st level, that sorcerer would have all 0th ~ 2nd level wizard spells on his spell list. So, the sorcerer would be able to activate a wand of magic missile, or a scroll of knock. The if the sorcerer had taken the Spell Schooling feat for Cleric spells once instead, he would be able to activate a wand of bless, but NOT a wand of magic missile.
You just have to 'get' the difference between 'spells known' and 'spells on your spell list'. You can only cast spells that you 'know', but merely need to have a spell on you 'spell list' toactivate a wand or scroll that stores that spell.
Clerics automatically 'know' all spells on thier spell list. Wizards (and the RAW sorcerer) may learn any spell that is 'on' their spell list, but do not actually 'know' a spell until he has learned it. My sorcerers may 'learn' any spell in existance (subject to DM approval, of course), but the only spells on his 'spell list' (ie the only spells that he can activate in wands or cast from scrolls) are the spells he actually 'knows'.
I hope this has made things clearer. If not, tell me and I'll try to do better. ^_^
As for the extra number of spells known... I have tweaked ALL casting classes IMC so that the spells-known and spells-per-day progress even beyond 20th level. I'll just edit it back so that the list is compatable with the original rules.

Thanks for the explanation, it makes alot of sense now, and I very much like. I'll feature it in my next game.

A special note. This tweak does require quite a bit of DM judgement.
As a rule of thumb, spells that only exist on the bard list should be learned at 3/2 their spell level (round up, so the Brd 3rd spell good hope would be a 4th level sorcerer spell); spell on the paladin or ranger lists should be learned at twice their spell level (round up, so the Pal 4th spell holy sword would be an 8th level sorcerer spell). If a spell exists on more than one spell list, use the priority: Wiz -> Clr -> Drd -> Brd -> Rng, Pal, Assassin, Demonist etc. DM judgement is required in all cases.

This tweak would also be a good idea to apply to the Archivist and their "learn any divine spell from a scroll" class feature.

Great thread! I've had that saved under my subscriptions for about 5 months and I just haven't gotten around to adding it in here yet
It is one of my favourites as well, though. Shows you that WotC shouldn't get into demographics too much
Thanks for enjoying my thread I like fans [/sblock]
