On speciality priests ?

Indeed, maybe this is part of the reason they are trimming down Forgotten Realms list of deities. If you create a "path" for each deity then you are talking about a lot of space. Trimming down the gods means you have to do less to have each cleric feel at least slightly different.

This could even be true if they make the paths/classes tied to a type of deity. If there is a
"god of magic path" clerics won't seem very different if you have several deities covering slightly different paths (which is what Forgotten Realms has now).

Bear in mind that we don't know whether 4e clerics will continue to have access to anything like the 3e cleric's full spell list; from what we've heard of wizards, it seems like they are limited in the number of powers they can know (unlike 3e wizards who could learn every arcane spell in the game). Clerics might be exactly the same: they might have to PICK their encounter spells as they level up, just like fighters and wizards, so they would by necessity be much more specialized than their 3e predecessors.
 

I was not against a limitations on known spells for clerics, like Sorcerers, perhaps tied to their religion...

As long as there is a degree of customisation offered - and well so - i am pleased. Clerics are my favorite class, I say (it's the spiritual side of things for me...).
 


Toward the end of second edition (specifically PO: Spells and Magic) they introduced another collection of "generic" classes to emulate other forms of priests. I think it might not be a bad idea to take that route (mixed with 3e's other divine classes) and add more divine classes along the way.
 

Has anyone heard anything about domains for clerics in 4E? Will they be changed or just dropped? They could be reworked to a set of powers you choose from, depending on your deity's portfolio.
