Tailspinner, how high are the ceilings in the house? Without Wireth to make tactical decisions (unless someone else wants to make a Handle Animal check to try to do so, which they're welcome to), Nairo's basically just an animal, and wormface is just "that thing that hurt my Alpha," so I think I have to play him as attacking by the most direct means possible.

If the ceilings are high enough, he ought to be able to occupy the space *above* Jakira and attack from there (he'd still be able to reach, I believe). It seems like a quadruped cat and a bird should be able to stack in roughly the same space a tall half-orc could move in, but I need to know before I can move him.

If not ... Suldrel's going to be very unhappy with the bird. Of course, the way this fight is going, he might not have to worry too long. ;)

re: Cover. Jakira could be treated like a low wall for a medium foe, but our lickety toad creature is small as well.
He is? For some reason I thought the transformation had him at Medium (it was that impressive :))... Drat, that means I had a +4 on that shove then. Could have pushed it back *2* squares and avoided all those Aoo if not for Fastus' lame leg (and an unforseen strairwell wall). :.-(

EDIT= Nevermind. Was in 3.5 mode there for a second. Small maluses in Pathfinder are only -1 CMD.

jkason: You'll get in Fastus' way this round though, if Sachiko stays were she is (he's definitively not Small). This being a halfling's house, our chances for a high ceiling don't seem too good, so another question might be: is there a wall at the left edge of the map TS or does the room go on? 10' wide seems quite narrow even for a halfling, considering the length of the thing...

With its speed Nairon would then be able to go around -- to "stand" guard right above his master too.

Assume a height of 6'-6" for the ceiling on average. Nairo should be able to occupy same space as Jakira.

FYI for the others, this arose when I suggested Suldrel should move to B11 next round to gain flanking bonus with Wireth (which is a bit moot now, sadly enough :().

To answer the question though, Pathfinder rules for (soft) cover state that a creature (including your allies) provides cover from your reach attack if you can't trace a line from any one corner of your square (your choice) to all corners of your target square without passing through that creature's square. With Fastus in B10 and Suldrel in A11, this is the case, so Fastus would, technically, have provided soft cover to the creature last round if he'd been in B10. Suldrel could have moved to 09 instead, so this isn't really a big deal for me. This round though, if/when Sachiko and now Fastus go into melee range with the creature... well there simply won't be any open lines of attacks not passing through a square containing a creature. So, as I stated, the best tactical position for Suldrel, to my mind, would therefore likely be right behind Jakira, which is Small and likely provides only partial cover (-2) for two medium creatures battling over it.

That said, a lot of DMs houserule this away, either reducing or removing the cover maluses for reach weapons.... TS?

EDIT = The map works fine for me now. Thanks TS.

I am inclined to play by the rules. It is just easier that way.

Hm! I assumed it was per threatened square!

Tailspinner, can we get a confirmation on that? If so, I will amend my move to A9 instead of 10.

I guess the FAQ supersedes the SRD/PRD. So we will go with the FAQ ruling. It would be nice if they added these types of clarifications to the SRD/PRD. While it works great for one foe, it will be harder with multiple foes using the FAQ ruling.

Also just because another player decides your character should do something, YOU should decide how your character would react in that situation and act that way.

I figured Nairo would get in a lot of folks' ways depending on Tailspinner's ruling. The problem isn't that I couldn't come up with better tactical positioning for Nairo, it was that I have absolutely no IC justification for letting an INT 2 animal without a controller make reasoned tactical decisions; he's going to act on instinct. Jariah might be able to Handle him, but since we're acting on initiative order, she wouldn't be able to do that until after his turn this round. And, again, I can't justify having Nairo delay without Wireth involved; he's literally a bird-brain. :)

But our good GM just solved that issue for now, thankfully. :)

Tailspinner, I do agree, but I'm going to go with the notion that Sachiko has a better eye for combat situations since she's actually there and has actually been in combat. And the idea of leaving some space for more friends to get close fits into that notion pretty well.

In the future I'll try to be more aware of that sort of thing going in, so it won't have to be fixed in hindsight again.
