Italy played a great game, despite some rough spots, but...are you serious?!?

It was a fair match, all be told.

Agreed. Italy lost out on another goal opportunity due to a bad linesman call but I really have to say that this happens ALL the time because being a linesman is incredibly difficult. Other than that, I thought it was well called. The call against Totti was fair, as was the penalty kick early on.

I do suspect that fans of the big teams are upset that the calls don't always go their way this time around (well, Turkey still got screwed against Brazil, but...). It used to be that Brazil, for example, could punch, bite and kick his way into scoring but it seems this time around that the referees are not afraid to make big calls against the big teams.

It was a fun game to watch because the Koreans played so hard for that tieing goal. I understand the tactics of playing defense with 30 minutes to go when you are up by 1, but this seems like one of the few tournaments where so many of the favorites have been burned for playing that way.

Can Korea beat Spain? After Spain's performance yesterday and after seeing this game, I would have to say yes. Will they? I may be proven wrong again, but my answer is: probably not.

I was joking with my (German) brother-in-law the other day that this could go down in history as the World Cup in which Germany advanced to the finals by beating a bunch of nobodies. Imagine it: Paraguay, USA, South Korea... and Germany is in the final! A more cynical German friend of mine replied: Germany could go down in history as the worst team ever to reach the finals. :D

I got this off of CNNSI:

In the history of the World Cup, only one team from outside Europe (UEFA) or South America (CONMEBOL), has made it as far as the semifinals of the World Cup. It happened 72 years ago, in the first-ever World Cup and, this may come as a surprise to some, it was the United States that reached the semifinal.

Ah, this is the World Cup thread. Let me repost:

Go south Korea! Go Guus Hiddink! Even though the Dutch team isn't in, at least we have one Dutchman still dealing out some nice surprises!

BTW, just two weeks before the World cup, the Netherlands beat the US with 2-0. And now look what the US is doing...

The Referee for Italy and Korea was turning a blind eye to the violence... one korean almost killed an italian in what was cleary a yellow card foul... and he didnt even give a foul at all !

The other korean took a kick at a fallen italian near the games end... I know koreans are a fighting type people... but hey not in soccer please.

The referee lost control of the match for sure...

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Hitting newsstands in the U.S. soon...

If there was violence present in the game (as it is in most games) it was hardly one-sided. 'Nuff said.

*Snort*, while there were some questionable calls (namely, the offside that wasn't an offside), Italy had golden chances to put it away.

I mean, right after Korea tied it, Vieri missed an OPEN net. There was no excuse for that.
