[OT] I hereby declare it to be BBQ season!

Senor Tarrasque's Carne Asada

Go to the Butcher, and have him slice up a flank steak for you real thin, about 1/4". Mix tequila, lime juice (fresh squeezed, not that crap in a plasic bottle), chopped fresh cilantro, some chile powder, and if you've got some, a dash of hababero sauce. Mix it all up, throw it in a bag with your meat. Let it sit all night, go out and buy some Coronas while-u-wait. It takes about a nanosecond over a hot flame to get it perfect.

Muy delicioso!

I don't know about no dictionary definitions, but here in the Southeastern United States barbeque has a very specific (and regionally variable) meaning.

I can still taste the profound disappointment I experienced in Rockford IL when I was invited to a barbeque, then served kielbasa and hamburgers.

I think more of the Carolina tradition: barbeque is pig cooked over a slow flame (you should be able to hold your hand over the fire for 8-10 seconds) and regularly basted with a mixture of vinegar, salt, and hot spices. This meat, after about twelve hours, is then pulled apart by hand and served with another vinegar and pepper based sauce.

Tomatoes are allowed in the salad and the brunswick stew, but should come no closer. If you want beef, go to Texas.

As Diaglo observed: if you are merely cooking outside over an open flame, we in these parts call that "cooking out." It's fun, it tastes great, and it is wonderful to be out doors--but I don't call it barbeque.

(please note that I am not claiming that any other definition of barbeque is wrong--simply pointing out that in this region of the world it is much more specific; in fact, in this part of the world some people take these relatively minor distinctions quite seriously).

You just won't rest until you have every one of us moving to Boston, will you? :)

He's just trying to keep a steady stream of replacements to make up for the players (of arcanists) that are constantly moving West.

I just got off the lake and filleted the first mess of crappie of the season. I'm cranking up the big fryer! Hoo man - it's sooo good.

I can't believe what I'm reading about BBQ season and it being too cold. We BBQ all year round, pretty much every weekend. Sure, it tests one's fortitude and dedication when it's -30 but the results are always worth it. :)

Favourite recipe: Salmon filets marinated in a thick sauce of dill (lots), garlic (to taste), pepper (not too much) and whatever other herbs are on hand. The trick with fish is not to overdo it.

Hey, sure you can BBQ when the temperature drops below -10 degrees celcius. However, by the time you take your meat of the grill and serve it, it's already cold. No thanks. I'd much rather have some BBQ and being able to enjoy the outdoors.

Besides, I'm doing my Ph.D. on the ecology of the American marten, I spend enough time already freezing my butt off in -20 to -30 degrees weather (before the wind chill), I don't need to do it while eating supper ! :)

That said, I enjoy having some dry rubbed chicken (cumin, cinnamon and turmeric) with grilled potatoes and corn. Also among favorites of mine : hamburgers, hot dogs, steak (the thicker the better), just about anything. Man do I look forward to owning a BBQ !

When do you move? Oh, I'm running a d20 Modern game at Pandemonium later this month, if you're interested.

He says casually, in complete disregard to the people who would run over their own mothers to play in one of his games.

Hey, how about you move down here where you don't have to use jumper cables on yourself to get going in January.

Bah, it's the middle of autumn over here, and it's just about the time that the weather starts to turn cold. Six months to wait for BBQ season for me.

On the upside, winter is roast seasons. Crispy chicken. Tender lamb. Potatoes that sizzle nicely when you take them out of the oven. I nice cup of coffee and a thimble of port to take the edge off the evening at the end.

I love winter.

I'd like winter more if I didn't live in suburban New Jersey.

Now, if, in the future, I own a big house with a good chunk of open land, so that I can actually ENJOY the snow and the good bits of all the other seasons, I might like winter. But right now I HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT!!!

Stupid suburbs!
