[OT] If you order from Reaper Minis, you might want to cancel your credit card.

I'm pretty happy with Reaper. The email was nice, but getting the phone call impressed me. Despite this, I've got no problem giving them another order. Just goes to show what good customer relations is worth.

Yep- the Reaper guys are definitely a class act. Very cool. The phone call was definitely a step above standard customer service stuff.

I'm confused

The announcement from Reaper says that this puts them in the "elite company of Amazon.com and Microsoft...." It seems like everyone here is interpreting this to mean that those two companies were also attacked in this fashion, but I interpreted it to mean that all three are companies that have received the attentions of malicious hackers, and not necessarily at the same time (i.e., this current problem that Reaper is having).

Do we have any evidence, aside from Reaper's comment, that Amazon's and Microsoft's customer databases were hacked? It's hard for me to believe that an attack on two large e-commerce sites would go unreported by the media.

ETA: I've been poking around, and it sounds as if the source of the problem is a flaw in part of the SSL code used to keep information secure. A patch for the code was released a couple weeks ago, but just in the last few days hackers have been exploiting it.
Here's a couple links:
Article on the security flaw from Accountingweb
MIcrosoft Security Bulletin

I'm not certain that this is what's happened, but thought I'd put it out there.

And? I say "Huzzah!" for Reaper Miniatures. I would expect, if Amazon is targeted, they would stonewall the public and deny everything. That's just what soul-less corporations do.
I think there's a California law requiring that firms doing business there inform their customers immediately in case of security breaches. Nifty legislation idea, I hope it spreads, but already that should be enough to prevent the new from being completely hushed. I'd like to see an article or a link about this, since I'm not a reaper customer but I am an amazon user...

Oh, joy to attack Reaper a small company, I can see going after Amazon and Micro$oft, maybe Walmart. It shows you that at least a few of the Morons who did this are at least ex-gamers. Bloody Evil Empire must have forced them to do this to buy a new army for Warhammster.

I can't say for sure, but I seem to recall a news piece I heard about this happening to Amazon several months, so that may be what Reaper is referring to when they say they are with "elite company," it may not be an indication that it has happened to them currently. Nice of Reaper to take it so seriously and take it right to the customers.

I feel sorry for you guys. Remind me to talk with James from RPGNow to make sure he's fully secure there.

I do find it a little odd that they'd send you your own credit card info in the email. How could that possibly help?

RPGNow and RPGShop have been target to these hackers in the past but we upped our security a bought a secure server and everything about a year ago (as many of you might remember with the rash of fake card hackers we had). Since then we've had no troubles. Also we never send you card data and the card data is only stored at the bank where you type it in, not our computer (unless you choose to save it with us). THe bank only sends you the last for digits of the card used.

So I wouldn't worry about our stores and please don't start spreading paranoid rumors and it helps no one.

James
